Are You A Covert Narcissist? – Mindset Monday

Are You A Covert Narcissist? – Mindset Monday

“Love isn’t something natural. Rather it requires discipline, concentration, patience, faith, and the overcoming of narcissism. It isn’t a feeling, it is a practice.” – Erich Fromm

I’m guessing you clicked into this article out of curiosity. You’re certainly not a narcissist… or are you? Read on to find out!

The Story Of Narcissus

The term “narcissist”, which means excessive interest in oneself, originated from Greek Mythology. Narcissus was the name of a river god’s son from Thespiae. Narcissus was considered to be very physically handsome.

As a result, he grew up to be very proud, and was often found staring at his own reflection in a pool of water. The story goes that Narcissus fell in love with his own image, not realizing that it was simply a reflection and not an actual person.

Two Types Of Narcissists

When most people think of a narcissist they think of the arrogant, overt narcissist. But there is actually another type of narcissist that is much more common.

We call her (or him) the shy, covert narcissist.

Both types of narcissists have the following characteristics:

  • grandiose fantasies
  • a sense of entitlement
  • exploitive tendencies

However, the covert narcissistic personality is also characterized heavily by:

  • worry
  • ineffective functioning
  • unfulfilled expectations
  • vulnerability to stress

Sound familiar?

Turns out, our narcissistic culture is not made up of arrogant jerks that we see in the movies. It’s made up of UNDERCOVER narcissists who are a little too obsessed with themselves.

Covert narcissists are constantly focusing their energy inward. The cost is a lack of peace, worried what others think, no real personal security in themselves despite how great their accomplishments may be.

Worry. Anxiety. Lack of inner peace.

Who knew this was actually a form of narcissism?

How To Release Your Inner Covert Narcissist

“I was heartbroken, scared, I had a lot of anxiety, I was worried, I felt weak, and I had no idea how I was ever going to come up with the strength. But I just closed my eyes, and took a blind leap. I knew I had to get out of there.” – Casey

I know it probably doesn’t make you thrilled to learn that you have some narcissistic tendencies… but don’t worry! There is a cure.

The solution to being a narcissist is knowing you are fully complete and loved for who you are. Then finding that inner love in yourself for other people and the world around you.  When you are filled with love there is no need to create an unhealthy fascination with oneself.

When you get so caught up with yourself you are really missing out on the gift what this life has for you and the gift you are to others.

The Challenge:

For next 7 days write out this mantra in your journal.

I am whole. I am loved. I am love. I am complete.

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
