Almonds have been said to boost memory and increase brain power. You may have been told this all your life… but does that make it true?

Almonds play host to many healthy nutrients that are beneficial to your overall health and are also known to enhance certain brain functions. They are rich in lean protein, which not only repairs brain cells (which in turn improves cognitive function), but also gives a great boost of energy.

Zinc is contained in almonds and is great for keeping the functioning of your immune system in shape. Zinc is a great antioxidant that fends off free radicals, which are located in the bloodstream and attack and break down brain cells.

Almonds are also full of vitamin E, which slows down the ageing process of brain cells linked to memory and vitamin B6, which is a promoter of brain health.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that are included in almonds are known to increase intellectual levels. The magnesium that is also included in almonds is able to strengthen the nerves located in your brain.

Here are 4 of the top health benefits of almonds:

1. They are able to protect your artery walls from damage. Alongside vitamin E, the flavonoids found in the almond skin work together in helping reduce heart disease.

2. They are able to provide better brain function. The L-carnitine and riboflavin found in almonds help reduce risk of Alzheimer’s disease and improve general brain activity.

3. They are able to reduce the risk of a heart attack.  According to the Loma Linda School of Public Health, people who consume nuts at least 5 times a week have a 50% reduced risk of a heart attack.

4. They are able to aid in weight loss. On average, those who consume nuts more frequently are thinner, even though nuts are high in fat.

It looks like almonds really are an effective brain food! They are a great snack to include in breakfast and throughout the day.

Keep a bag with you while you’re at work or running errands to munch on and keep you satiated and your brain happy. Throw some into your kid’s lunches to help give them a mental boost for school. Try incorporating them into one of your main meals this week. Grab a handful when you’re needing a salty fix. The options are endless!

Do you know any awesome ways to keep almonds incorporated in your diet? Please share with us in the comments below, we love to hear from you!
