Antibiotics were one of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century. They saved millions of lives. The whole story started with the famous penicillin. Since then, many types of antimicrobial substances have become a part of this group.

Antibiotics were considered almost as some kind of panacea and doctors started to prescribe them, even in cases when antibiotics weren’t absolutely necessary.

Soon they were faced with bacterial infections, which were resistant to the prescribed drug. Today, due to the misuse of these substances, more and more antibiotic resistant microbes have popped up.

Antibiotic resistance is the nightmare of physicians. In many cases, hospitalized patients die of this phenomenon. Doctors give one type of antibiotic – resistance – another type of antibiotic – resistance – and the cycle goes on until they face a resistant species that is resistant to all antibiotics, ultimately leaving patients without a cure.

That’s why antibiotics should be used more carefully. The more they’re used, the more chance there is that some kind of resistance will evolve.

Thankfully, there are wonderful herbs in nature that can perform just as well – if not better – than antibiotics, without the harmful side effects and less chance of resistance.

1. Carvacrol

Carvacrol is one of the main ingredients in oregano oil besides thymol. Carvacrol has many proven benefits, such as:

  • Antioxidant
  • Protects the liver

  • Tumor protection
  • Antiviral
  • Promotes normal lipid levels
  • Antiparasite
  • Helps to balance blood sugar levels
  • Antiinflammatory

2. Powerful Antibiotic

Oil of oregano was found very effective against 5 species of harmful bacteria, especially E. coli, which makes it useful against deadly food poisoning and helpful at promoting gut health.

Another advantage of oregano is that it doesn’t disturb beneficial bacteria, whereas most drugs can cause serious diarrhea and Clostridium overgrowth, which can be a life-threatening health issue.

Some research has shown that the oil may even be successful at killing MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), an antibiotic-resistant bacteria that causes many problems in hospitals.

3. Candida

Due to its potent antifungal chemical content, scientists were able to use oregano to beat candida successfully.

4. Antiviral Effects

Many times doctors prescribe antibiotics in viral infections to prevent cross-infections. The good news is that this oil not only has great antimicrobial properties, but it is also effective against viral infections.

It is able to destroy RNA and DNA viruses. These can cause cold sores, herpes, shingles.
