Achieving Happiness: The Essential Part To Living Your Best Life
Written by: Kavata Kithome
Happiness is an essential part of living your best life.
As a health coach, I am interested in every aspect of health. I encounter many people who not only need help in their physical health, but also in their mindset and perspective. I believe that finding a way to take advantage of your health, wellness and vitality is key in experiencing a full life and achieving happiness is what can help you get there.
A happy you is a healthy you and in efforts to help you get closer to your healthiest you, here are 7 ways to achieving happiness:
1. You Have The Right Of Choice
When all else fails, remember this simple lesson – YOU are in control. This means that you get to choose to find happiness in everyday things, no matter how big or small.
How you view yourself and the world are conscious choices and habits; this is good news. This means that you can literally design your happiness. How awesome is that? I encourage to check the lens you are looking through and choose to look at things in a more positive way.
2. Focus On The Now, Not Yesterday Or Tomorrow
There is only NOW, everything before is gone and the quality of everything after is determined by how well you live in the present. Many of us are so often living in the past or the future, that we tend to neglect the present moment.
As the saying goes, “today is a gift, that is why it is called the present.“ Make the decision to focus on the now and make it the best that it can be.
3. Have Gratitude
Happiness doesn’t come from things, but rather, from being aware of and appreciating what you already have. I often struggled with this one; because I was always so busy focusing on the future and past, I rarely took the time to see what I had in the present moment. This made me less grateful. With less gratitude, I had more stress and an overall low quality of life.
While on my search to improve the quality of my life, I found that a great question to ask is, “what can I be grateful for, if I wanted to be?” This was the biggest lessons that I had to learn myself. I started small, being grateful that I could breathe freely, that I could hear the noisy birds that kept me up at night and that I had the ability to know that I have accomplished many things.
4. Help Someone
As the saying goes, “charity begins at home.” What a profound saying! It simply means to be open and giving. The beauty of giving is that it only requires giving selflessly.
I once heard that the most selfless thing that you can do is to help someone. It doesn’t have to be monetary, it can be as simple as taking the time to really notice someone and acknowledge them within this human experience.
I remember when I was younger, my mother would always stop and give of herself to strangers. It would bother me, because that meant that I had to stand around until she was done. Little did I know that she was tapping into the Law of Reciprocity by simply sharing her time and to this day, my mother’s life experience still blows my mind. She has had the privilege of having the most amazing experiences just from reaching out to others.
Taking a moment to give your time to someone by helping them do something, or to complete a long-standing task is a great start. When you make someone else happy, the Law of Reciprocity dictates that the happiness flows back to you.
5. Take A Moment To Revisit Your Wants And Desires
I like to do this in the beginning of every year, right around my birthday. I am a January baby. I always sit and look at all the things that I set out to do the year before and honestly look at those that I was able to achieve and those that I wasn’t.
I then take it a step further and consider why the achievements that I didn’t do weren’t done. Most times it is because I lost interest in them. By doing this process, I am able to release those goals and lighten the load, creating space for my new goals.
6. Just Do It
Look at all the things that you are doing right now; I am sure that you will find something that you no longer enjoy. It is easy to fall into the trap of doing what you hate or dislike.
In your free time, you likely have a leisure activity that you do. Do more of it and try to maximize that time and free up more time to do it. This leisure activity makes you happy and happiness is the key to success.
In this society, the amount of criticism that is levied for anything we do often leaves us in a state of paralysis. This paralysis comes from anxiety, because taking action can be scary and difficult, but by not taking action, you will be missing out on a lot. Rise up and go experience those moments, people and opportunities that are out there just waiting for you.
7. Have A Daily Theme
Create a theme for the day and follow it. Let you theme be infectious so that it carries itself all throughout the day. Let it reflect itself in all that you do.
Overall, friend, be brave: happiness is about bravery, the ability to narrow in on exactly what will make you smile and celebrate it.
