Inflammation. The pain, soreness, swelling and reddened knee that you injured playing baseball 20 years ago in high school. The allergy headache you get when you eat dairy. It’s your body telling you that something isn’t quite right.
This is all part of the body’s immune response trying to fight off foreign invaders.
Inflammation is the process by which our white blood cells protect our bodies from foreign organisms such as viruses and bacteria; the attempt to self-protect and remove these invaders.Inflammation is your body’s healthy process of coming to aid the body if it’s injured, in usual circumstances. However, if you have constant and recurring inflammation, you might have chronic inflammation, which could be a symptom of something even more serious.
What is Chronic Inflammation?
Inflammation becomes chronic when it stops being acute (such as from a sport injury or a cut). It is when your body no longer has the ability to “turn off” the inflammatory response and instead starts damaging healthy tissue in your body, basically attacking your body.
Chronic inflammation could damage the healthy tissue in your intestines giving you digestive problems, the arteries of your heart or it could damage your joints.
Sometimes our immune systems can’t handle the attacks of foreign invaders. Potentially due to being overworked from fighting off a cold, or even cancer cells that are usually normally destroyed by the immune system. When this happens, the immune system turns against itself causing serious consequences such as Graves’ disease and Lupus or other autoimmune diseases, which in turn causes chronic inflammation.
Inflammation and Disease
Autoimmune disease is not the only disease that can be caused from chronic inflammation. Heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s are a few others that are the consequences of chronic inflammation. Constant and recurring inflammation makes diseases more perceptible to an individual.
Heart disease is not caused only from plaque buildup in the arteries, but from a combination of the plaque buildup and inflammation.Your body views plaque as a foreign material, therefore, the immune system tries to prevent the plaque from flowing along with the blood. In worst cases, the plaque can rupture and anything that has been walled-off will come into contact with the blood and form a blood clot. In turn, your body triggers the inflammation response and the arteries begin to swell, constricting blood flow to the heart.
Inflammation can also play a role in the beginning of other diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer’s.With diabetes, inflammation is internal. Recent research suggests that the inflammation inside your body can play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes. Individuals with type 2 diabetes don’t produce enough insulin or their bodies can’t use the insulin adequately. Insulin can have a negative effect on the tissue in the body, one of which includes obesity and having an extra accumulation of fat around the belly and other major organs.
Researchers have discovered that people with type 2 diabetes have a higher level of cytokine, which is an inflammation-boosting protein that is released by cell that have a specific effect on the interaction between cells; basically the communication between one cell and another.
Fat cells act like a factory for cytokine. The more fat cells, the more cytokine. Cytokine triggers cells response to inflammation and to respond to infections. When a person’s cytokine level is elevated, this causes chronic internal inflammation. When a person starts to develop type 2 diabetes, their body becomes less sensitive to insulin and results in insulin resistance, which causes inflammation. This is a vicious cycle that continues. More inflammation causes more insulin resistance.
Inflammation can be a disease trigger for Alzheimer’s. Researchers have found that by looking at the patient’s history, they are able to connect the dots with Alzheimer’s and inflammation, such as those who have had a serious head injury. Researchers have also found that people who have taken anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen have a lower chance of having Alzheimer’s.
A main component of Alzheimer’s is the presence of plaques. These plaques are seen as foreign invaders and the body tries to destroy them, therefore, causing chronic inflammation.
Inflammation and Cancer
As we already know, chronic inflammation can wreak havoc on your body. It can create the best environment for rogue cells. If a rogue cell travels through the body, it can eventually damage a healthy strand of DNA causing it to mutate. As the small mutation starts growing inside your body, it tries to get enough oxygen and nutrients that it can from its surroundings. As the cells mutate, it becomes a cancerous tumor.
Cancers, such as colon cancer and breast cancer, are some that can be caused by chronic inflammation. Colon cancer can occur in individuals who have inflammatory bowel disease, which is the inflammation of all or part of the digestive tract.
A type of breast cancer called Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) may also be caused from chronic inflammation. This cancer is caused when cancer cells block the lymph vessels in the skin. Lymph vessels are thin, valved structures that carry lymph, a fluid that contains white blood cells and drains through the lymphatic system. If these lymph vessels become blocked, the cancer has nowhere to go and can continue to grow.
Sometimes there are uncontrollable risk factors, such as heart disease that runs in your family. Even if you are at risk for illnesses and disease, it doesn’t mean that there is no hope. There are ways that you can prevent and control inflammation and the diseases that cause inflammation through moving your body and eating a clean diet.
Another way to combat and prevent inflammation is to get up and get moving. It doesn’t matter what you do or how you do it, it just matters that you MOVE your body each day.
People who exercise are less-likely to be overweight, which lowers the chances of suffering from an inflammation related disease. While scientists are not yet sure as to how exercise combats inflammation, they have found that 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise such as walking, swimming or yard work can help lower the chance of inflammation. Remember: small micro-commitments create healthy habits, which create big change overtime. Just get started.
One of the best ways to control and prevent inflammation is through adopting healthy eating habits. Foods that are high in sugar and fat cause inflammation. Therefore, decrease or eliminate soda, refined carbohydrates and processed foods. Basically, anything that can contribute to weight gain can contribute to inflammation.
Rule of thumb: EAT REAL FOOD!Focus on a plant-based diet, full of nature’s most powerful medicine, straight from the earth.
Foods to fight against or prevent inflammation:
Fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and sardines
Leafy greens such as kale, spinach and chard
Nuts and berries like almonds, walnuts, strawberries and blueberries
There’s so much more than just that! There are also different herbs and spices that help in the fight against inflammation, such as turmeric and ginger. Omega-3 (fish oil) is also used to combat inflammation.
Cutting back on wheat and dairy has also been shown to help improve or combat inflammation.Wheat and dairy are the two main trigger foods for inflammation, along with sugar and alcohol. Many people have food allergies to one or both of these trigger foods, which in turn causes inflammation and swelling. Sometimes all it takes is a sip of milk to kick everything into high gear.
You’ve heard me talk about this before, but I just can’t get enough!
Turmeric is a medicinal magician and a great way to combat inflammation. Turmeric has an active ingredient called curcumin and is the main spice in curry. It has amazing antioxidant and since turmeric is an anti-inflammatory, it is often used to help relieve inflammation for arthritis, muscle sprains and other types of injuries. It has also been said that turmeric may prevent and even slow cancer growth.
One of the best things about this magical root is that it’s so simple to use and in addition to the benefits already listed, it’s great for:
Boosting brain health
Alleviating pain and stiffness
May improve kidney function
And that’s not all!
There is a ton of research on turmeric’s ability to create balance in the body and eradicate inflammation. I am by no means a doctor so please, do your research! I just find this so fascinating and felt it important to pass along.
Some interesting findings I came across include:
There have been studies that suggest that curcumin may help prevent or treat different types of cancers such as breast, skin, prostate and colon cancer. The preventative effects that turmeric has may be related to its antioxidant properties, which protect cells from damage.
Numerous studies have shown that curcumin’s anti-inflammatory property is shown to be comparable to anti-inflammatory drugs such as hydrocortisone, phenylbutazone, and also over-the-counter Motrin. These anti-inflammatory drugs can create toxic effects such as ulcer formation, intestinal bleeding and decreased white blood cell count. Curcumin does not create any of these toxicities.
Studies have shown that curcumin also has very powerful antioxidant properties. Being an antioxidant, curcumin is able to neutralize free radicals, which are chemicals that can travel through the body. These chemicals cause large amounts of damage to healthy cells and cell membranes.
Diseases such as arthritis are caused by these free radicals; they are responsible for causing joint pain inflammation and eventually, can lead to damage of the joints. This explains why many people with joint disease or rheumatoid arthritis find relief when they use turmeric regularly.
In a recent study, patients with rheumatoid arthritis compared the effects of curcumin to the effects of phenylbutazone. The results were that there were shortened the duration of morning stiffness, lengthened walking time and reduced joint swelling when using turmeric.
Numerous studies have found that curcumin (the active chemical in turmeric) protects against Alzheimer’s disease. It works to help the brain protect itself against Alzheimer’s by turning a gene that codes from the production of antioxidant proteins.
A study that was published in the Italian Journal of Biochemistry (December 2003) states that the role of curcumin in the induction of the heme oxygenase pathway, which is a protective system. When this system is triggered in brain tissue, it causes the production of the antioxidant bilirubin. Bilirubin protects the brain against injury from free radicals. This is thought to be the major factor in aging and is also known to be responsible in neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s.
Another study, also conducted by an Italian and U.S. team, confirmed that the effects of curcumin induce the expression of a gene called hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1).
Ways to Use Turmeric
I could go on and on here. My favorite way is to juice it, but there are so many other options that are equally as beneficial and delicious!
Use it in soups such as a bowl of vegetable or chicken soup
Add it to your scrambled eggs; turmeric gives a subtle but new flavor
Use it to spice up your veggies. Turmeric works well with potatoes, cauliflower and root vegetables
Sprinkle some on your greens like kale, collards and cabbage.
Mix it into your smoothies.
Make tea. Simmer turmeric with honey and unsweetened non-dairy milk (almond or coconut).
Take as a supplement… keep reading. 🙂
