Probiotics. Virtually, everyone has heard of them. But not everyone has heard of the different types of bacteria there are that make up a healthy probiotic.
Bifidobacterium Longum, or more commonly known as B. Longum, is one of the most important “good” bacteria that inhabits the human body. Tolerance tests show that it is well tolerated as an oral probiotic.
B. Longum is a probiotic bacterium with a long list of health benefits, especially in regards to your colon. In particular, it’s been shown to protect humans against inflammation, infection, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
B. Longum lives in your gastrointestinal tract along with other bacteria and represents up to 90% of the bacteria in an infant’s gastrointestinal tract. This number gradually drops to 3% in an adult’s gastrointestinal tract as other bacteria begin to dominate.
There are several types of food sources in which B. Longum can be found. These food sources include yogurt, various types of fermented dairy foods and cultured vegetables. This probiotic microbe is also present in breast milk as it is one of the first microbes to colonize the infant gut. It also may be taken in supplement form.

1. Anti-inflammatory properties: They protect the cells lining your mucous membranes from toxins and help some of your immune cells to mature so they can function properly. Tests show that consumption of B. Longum was effective in improving clinical symptoms in patients with active crohn’s disease. As well, sufferers of irritable bowel syndrome have lower levels of the beneficial bacteria than non-sufferers.
2. Protection against colon cancer: Tests on B. Longum concluded that taking B. Longum causes significant suppression of colon tumor incidence and also reduces tumor volume. The study also showed that B. Longum prevented the cancer from spreading and stopped tumors from growing.
3. Lowering of cholesterol: B. longum can “scavenge” free radicals, lowering a person’s chance of atherosclerosis and stroke. The ability of B. Longum to remove cholesterol from its environment by incorporating cholesterol into its membrane is thought to lower the serum cholesterol level in humans.
4. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea: Taking a probiotic that includes B. Longum can repopulate the good bacteria that are eradicated when taking antibiotics, leaving your colon depleted.
5. Improves lactose intolerance: B. Longum can help control gastrointestinal upsets with rumbling bowels, gas and diarrhea that often occur with those who suffer from lactose intolerance.
