9 Ways To Use Apple Cider Vinegar You Haven’t Thought Of Yet

I am obsessed with gut health, this is because I have had first-hand experience with both optimum gut health and well… not optimum gut health.

If you have been reading and following my articles, you may know that I suffered from leaky gut before I went through my transformation. You may also remember that I had severe food sensitivity and allergies that made life difficult. I have spoken candidly about how things were and how they are now and shared my path to being healthy and happy.

When it comes to promoting and maintain gut and overall health, aside from probiotics, lemon and whole foods, one of my best go-to’s is apple cider vinegar (ACV).

There are so many articles out there raving about the awesomeness of apple cider vinegar and for good reason. Apple cider vinegar is particularly great for improving digestion and helping gut health and it also has other varied health benefits, including reducing the sugar impact of foods and improving blood sugar and Hemoglobin A1c levels as well as blood lipids. It even appears to have the ability to protect against oxidative stress, therefore, inhibiting heart-disease and promoting lipid oxidation.

I am sure that you don’t need too much convincing so I will cut right the chase, I would like to share with you 9 easy ways to incorporate this amazing miracle superfood into your daily life. But before we do, here are a quick note to remember.

  • Braggs apple cider vinegar is inexpensive (usually around $7 a bottle) and easy to find at any grocery store
  • Remember to look for one “With The ‘Mother’” for max benefits 

#1. Use It In Salad Dressing

The magic vinaigrette ratio is one part of any vinegar to three parts oil. For me, apple cider vinegar works best with olive oil and if I am feeling adventurous, I use avocado oil. You can use any oil: hemp, walnut, hazelnut.

  • Simply whisk together apple cider vinegar and a dab of mustard, then drizzle in oil of your choice (remember, use a 3:1 ratio, so if you have 1 tablespoon of vinegar, use 3 tablespoons of oil).
  • Whisk aggressively the whole time.
  • Add salt to taste.
  • Optional: add in extra flavorings of choice – chopped shallot, fresh herbs, minced garlic, citrus zest. 

#2. Make An Immune-Boosting Shot

To know me is to know that I hate being sick with the cold or flu, the whole ordeal is just such an inconvenience. This is where apple cider vinegar can help. It takes a bit of effort to make an immune boosting shot, but the results are well worth it. To make it:

  • Grate a few cloves of garlic, some horseradish, some fresh ginger root, one chopped onion, zest and juice from one lemon into a jar.
  • Top it off with apple cider vinegar until all of the ingredients are covered and there’s about an inch of apple cider vinegar above.
  • Screw on a lid and let sit for a few weeks to allow it to ferment.
  • When you’re ready to use it, strain out the solids and discard, retaining the liquid.
  • Add honey to taste if you’d like and take a shot whenever you’re feeling under the weather, or daily for immunity. 

#3. Calm Your Soul With Healthy Apple Cider

My sister loves apple cider in the winter and for good reason! Is there anything better than a delicious mug of hot apple cider? What if I told you can enjoy the flavor minus all the sugar?

The resulting drink? A gut-soothing, digestion-boosting and super delicious taste of heaven.

#4. Energizing Morning Elixir

You know I am always about beginning your day on the right foot. Add this mixture to your morning ritual in a shot glass (you can use a normal glass, but it might not feel as fun): combine the juice of one lemon, a splash of apple cider vinegar, a pinch of mineral salt and water to fill. And then go take on the world.

#5. Vegan Cheese Dip

Top culinary secret: if you want to make the best, most movie-worthy cheese sauce, you don’t need cheese at all. You need potatoes.

When boiled potatoes are blended, their starches release and they create the gooiest sauce you can imagine. Add some nutritional yeast for cheesy flavor, carrots for color and sweetness and a splash of apple cider vinegar for acid and you’ve got the base of great mac and cheese, nachos, loaded baked potatoes and more. Nacho Cheese Sauce
 
Tip: it's important to dice the potatoes and carrots small before measuring (about ½-inch/1-cm pieces); I recommend weighing the potato and carrot for the most accurate measurement. To make it nut-free, simply omit the cashews. It won't be quite as rich, but it still tastes great!
Serves: Makes 1 Cup (250 mL)
Ingredients
  • ¼ cup (60 mL) raw cashews
  • 1¼ cups (300 mL/6½ ounces/190 g) diced peeled potatoes
  • Heaping ⅓ cup (100 mL/2 ounces/ 55 g) diced carrots
  • 2 to 3 tbsp (30 to 45 mL) nutritional yeast, to taste
  • 2 tbsp (30 mL) refined coconut oil or other neutral-tasting oil, such as grapeseed oil
  • 2 tbsp plus 1½ teaspoons (37 mL) water
  • 1½ tsp (7 mL) fresh lemon juice, or more to taste
  • ½ tsp (2 mL) plus ⅛ teaspoon (½ mL) fine sea salt, or to taste
  • 1 medium clove garlic
  • ½ to ¾ tsp (2 to 4 mL) white wine vinegar, to taste
  • Sriracha or other hot sauce (optional)
Instructions
  1. Soak the cashews in a bowl of water overnight or for at least 1 hour. Rinse and drain.
  2. Put the potatoes and carrots in a medium pot and add water to cover. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce the heat to medium and simmer uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes, until fork-tender. Drain (alternatively, you can steam the veggies).
  3. Transfer the cashews, potatoes and carrots to a blender, add the nutritional yeast, coconut oil, water, lemon juice, ½ teaspoon (2 mL) of the salt, garlic and vinegar and blend until smooth. If using a Vitamix, use the tamper to help it blend. If it's too thick, you can add another splash of water or oil to help it along. Taste the sauce and add sriracha and more salt, if desired. The sauce will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

#6. Add It To Baked Goods

Did you know that apple cider vinegar helps make baked goods rise? Looking for a fluffier pancake batter? Just toss in a splash of apple cider vinegar and whisk until well-combined. A tablespoon or splash will do just fine and won’t make your cake taste vinegary at all.

#7. Make Fluffy Rice

This one’s easy – add a splash of apple cider vinegar when you add rice, quinoa, or other grains to boiling water for the fluffiest finished product ever. I learned this trick from a friend and it changed my life!

#8. Use To Make The Best Switchel You Ever Had

Switchel is an apple cider-based beverage with ginger, honey or maple syrup and seltzer. To make:

  • Just muddle some sliced ginger in the bottom of a jar.
  • Add a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.
  • Honey or maple syrup to taste.
  • Shake aggressively to blend.
  • Leave it overnight in the fridge, then strain out and discard the ginger. 

Top with seltzer for a sparkly, sweet-and-sour drink that’ll make you forget lemonade even exists.

#9. Take It By The Spoonful

This is an oldie, but definitely a goodie, but keep in mind to do this in moderation. Simply combine a splash of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water and drink before meals to stimulate your digestion and help your gut sit comfier.

  1. Bring half of the water to boil in a kettle or on the stovetop. Pour the other half of the water and all remaining ingredients into a mug and stir well, then add boiling water. It should be perfect drinking temperature (don't boil all of your water, or you'll kill the good properties of the apple cider vinegar and the honey).

Sweet Potato Turmeric Muffins (Grain Free, Refined Sugar Free, Protein-Packed)

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a muffin pan (I used a mini one, because I like the texture slightly better and it's more fun to snack on, but it’s up to you).
  2. In a mixing bowl, stir together all wet ingredients until very smooth.
  3. In another mixing bowl, stir together all dry ingredients until well combined.
  4. Add dry ingredients into wet, mixing until no clumps remain.
  5. Spoon into muffin tin of choice. These won't rise a ton, so really mound the batter on to get that gorgeous muffin top. Sprinkle with black pepper.
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes for mini muffins or 30-45 minutes for larger ones, or until the tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Store in an airtight container or Ziploc bag in the fridge. Makes 30 mini muffins.

Apple cider vinegar is like salt, sugar, lemons and towel paper in my house, always in stock. This is because it is truly one of the best remedying foods out there. I am sure you don’t need too much convincing and you probably have a deep appreciation and profound respect for this superfood. My goal was to give you even more reason to absolutely swear by it!
