“No matter what is happening around you, first take care of yourself. When you are balanced, all things will be gradually added to your life… and the changes you have asked for will occur.”
If I were to ask you if you have balance in your everyday life, what would come to mind?
You would probably ask yourself questions similar to these:
Is the time I spend in work, play and rest balanced and equal?
Am I spending enough time with my family and friends?
Is my diet a balanced, healthy and nutritious?
Am I balanced between necessities and luxuries?
Am I reading books as much as I am sitting in front of the computer and TV screen?
Is my media intake balanced?
These are all excellent questions, but they reside outside of the key factor in finding true balance and harmony in your life, which is…
You see, our life is a constant dance between our inner and outer worlds, each shaping and influencing the other to dramatic degrees. We can’t have the outer world we truly desire without getting our inner world in the right place.
Think about this scenario… something in your life feels out of balance. It bothers you. Maybe you feel guilty, uneasy or insecure about it. So you make some external changes. You adjust your schedule. You clean up. You set some goals. You readjust.
For a while it works… things run more smoothly, you feel better. But the change isn’t permanent. Sure enough, when the pressure is on or when you get tired, you fall back into your old ways.
This is because you focused only on the EXTERNAL and not on the INTERNAL.
Kind of like updating your car; adding new beautiful pieces and paint, but leaving the old engine inside. The car is going to run the same way it always has even if it looks prettier on the outside for a while.
So when you want to feel happier, more successful, more at peace, more capable and more in tune with the world around you… it is time to turn inward.
In this Mindset Monday I want to reveal…
8 Ways To Inner Harmony
So simple. Regardless of whether or not you have a gym routine, just get out there and MOVE. Our bodies, like the earth in orbit, like water in a stream, like plants that grow and sway in the wind, like other creatures who walk and run… were made to be IN MOTION.
The more you move, the more you increase the neurochemicals in your brain that stimulate good things like growth, development and the creation of happy hormones like serotonin, dopamine and endorphins.
Study after study continues to prove that EXERCISE has the potential to bring one to a better mental state; reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression and bringing an overall sense of wellness.
This is key.
When we fail to forgive, we are gripping tightly to something in the past. In renders us incapable of being completely in the present. It prevents us from living in harmony.
What grudges are you holding onto from your past that weigh you down?
I promise that FORGIVENESS does not mean ACCEPTANCE of something that happened. It is simply letting go so that it no longer has the power to hurt you.
Sometimes we hold onto a grudge because we feel that letting go of it would let the other person who hurt us off the hook… but this is not actually true.
I’ve heard it described this way once: when we hold a grudge, we are drinking poison and hoping that the other person dies.
Sad, but true. So let go. Look at is as letting YOURSELF be free.
#3 Clean Your House
I had a mentor tell me this a long time ago.
“Drew, make sure all your clothes are dry cleaned and pressed. If you have to take a trip within 24 hours, you want all your stuff ready to go.”
I applied that to my closet. I applied it my whole house. What happened was a manifestation of that outside world becoming more organized and productive. It opened up a space for creativity and productivity that was otherwise stifled because of mess.
When the things around you are cluttered, it is a reflection of what is going on inside you. It can be a sign that you are having a hard time letting go of the past, of relationships that are no longer serving you or of conflict and disorder going on inside your heart.
Take the first step and clean your outer world as this will encourage your inner world to follow and create a space where tranquility can exist.
If you’re single like me… you still need to experience human touch. A massage is one of the best ways to experience human touch and increase those happy neurochemicals.
Human connection is incredibly important. Touch is a major way of bringing this connection into our life.
Did you know that feeling ISOLATED and LONELY are more damaging to longevity than OBESITY? This has actually been studied and proven true!
If you can’t afford a massage, just give someone a hug. Studies have shown that just a 20 second hug or holding hands with someone for 10 minutes causes chemical reactions in the body that promote wellness, reduce stress and ease symptoms of depression.
#5 Give A Gift
Although giving a gift may seem like an external gesture, it has a magnificent effect on our internal well being.
When we are in an altruistic state, we are pulled out of our worries and into a place of great satisfaction. Something as simple as buying a coffee for someone behind you in line immediately brings balance into who you are.
This may sound a little woo-woo, but stay with me!
Think of yourself 5, 10 or even 20 years ago. I want you to remember the things you were doing back then and how they brought you to where you are now.
Then I want you to write a thank-you note to that younger version of yourself.
I’m serious! Grab a pen and paper before you go to bed tonight, get old fashioned and write the thank-you note. Show appreciation for the hard work, challenges and troubles that you went through in years past and how your strength got you to where you’re at now.
Also think about things you can thank yourself for TODAY. You are doing some amazing things RIGHT NOW that are greatly benefiting yourself in the future. Be grateful for yourself!
This will absolutely change your state of mind. I guarantee it.
If you’ve been hanging around FitLife for long then you know I LOVE reading. I believe absolutely everyone should make time to read good, uplifting and educational material.
When we are positively putting information in our brain of things we want to learn, something changes inside of us.
We flip this switch on that makes us looks for opportunities to grow.
Growth, like movement, is central to our very being and important for maintaining balance.
A study published in the Annual Review of Psychology showed that when people read about experiences, they show activity in the same areas of the brain as a person would if they were actually going through the experience themselves. How cool is that?
Reading broadens our mind, teaches us empathy and makes us better people.
You already are perfect. You’re whole. You’re complete. You are ENOUGH.
There are 7 billion people on this planet and you are perfect exactly the way you are.
When you are in this state… this state of realizing that you are perfect and whole and enough… the other seven things I talked about become obsolete.
This state of wholeness is our goal.
All the seven things we talked about will bring momentum to put you into this state of balance and wholeness. If you can do these things your life will radically change.
