8 Warning Signs Someone You Love Is A Highly Functioning Alcoholic

When you hear the word “alcoholic,” what comes to mind?

A stereotypical alcoholic is someone who drinks all the time, spends all his money on alcohol, can’t hold a job and is possibly violent.

Not all alcoholics are like that. In fact, most people who are alcoholics or have trouble with alcohol are high functioning. They have jobs, families and hobbies. They may only be ‘getting a few beers after work’ every day or get drunk on the weekends or use their addiction in more socially acceptable ways.

Since drinking alcohol is socially acceptable and can be done within healthy limits, it is easy to hide an addiction. Many may not even know they have a problem.

How do you know if a loved one (or perhaps you) has a problem with alcohol?

Watch for these 8 signs of high functioning alcoholics:

  1. They don’t think they have a problem. They don’t fit into negative stereotypes. They only drink with their buddies, after work, during the game, at parties and so on. They may seem like the fun one or the person who likes their beer.
  2. They may not drink constantly, but can’t control it. They may not drink every day or even every week, but once they start, they can’t stop. They will be the one who can’t stop at one or two drinks, end up dancing on the table, and suffer from the biggest hangover after binge-drinking.
  3. They have trouble remembering things. A night out is a night to remember. Not for them. They may not remember how they got home and wonder why they have a headache the next day.
  4. They get irritable when they are drinking. When they can’t drink for a period of time, even if they just skip an evening beer, they get antsy, irritable and anxious. These are classic signs of withdrawal and addiction.
  5. They lie to hide their alcohol abuse. They may hide bottles. They may hide bills. They may lie about the amount they drink or how often they go out.
  6. They forgo food for alcohol. For some, a meal is a reason to drink. For others, especially when they care about calories, alcohol is the way to meet their calories instead of food.
  7. They isolate themselves. They withdraw from social events and occasions because of the fear of judgment. They may not go out, but prefer to drink alone at home.
  8. They always have an excuse. It was someone’s birthday. It was a company party. The beer was on sale. It’s October fest. Everyone else was drinking. It was only a glass of wine. There is always an excuse why they are drinking.

Remember, alcohol addiction is a serious mental health issue that can lead to a physical health issue, further mental health problems and social issues.

Alcohol addiction is not a choice, but any alcoholic can choose to recover. Talk to your friend or family member who may be dealing with alcoholism. Encourage them to seek help from an addiction counselor, therapist, or other mental health professional. Support their recovery.
