8 Tips to Relieve Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects roughly 8-9% of women in childbearing age. However, scientist haven’t discovered what the main cause is. Many think that high insulin levels, metabolic syndrome, low-grade inflammation and genetics may be linked to the onset of PCOS.

PCOS is condition tied directly to hormonal imbalance, whereas the ovaries make more male hormones than normal, which leads to high androgen and testosterone levels. PCOS symptoms can vary, as every woman is different. The most common symptoms include:

  • Infertility
  • Hirsutism – excessive hair growth on face, chest, stomach, back
  • Infrequent menstrual cycles
  • Weight gain or obesity
  • Pelvic pain
  • Thinning hair or even baldness
  • Acne

Here are some natural tips to help you balance your hormone levels so you can begin to feel your best again.

  1. Spearmint Tea

Spearmint tea can reduce testosterone levels due to it’s antiandrogenic effects. A study showed that just 2 cups of this tea daily may reduce testosterone levels by 30% within 5 days. Drinking spearmint tea can also help decrease excessive hair growth.

  1. Lose Weight

Adipocytes, or fat cells, are involved in the interconversion of different steroidal hormones (including sex steroids and corticosteroids) in both males and females. Researchers discovered that obese women with PCOS have increased blood androgen levels and found that there is a positive association of BMI with higher androgen hormone concentrations.


  1. Maintain Healthy Blood Sugar Levels

Reduce your intake of refined sugars and carbohydrates. Incorporate more apple cider vinegar and cinnamon in your diet, as these can help you to stabilize your blood sugar.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric can help to manage your blood sugar levels, as well as reduce inflammation and assist in halting additional weight gain (paired with a healthy and active lifestyle).

  1. Flaxseed

Flaxseed not only helps to control insulin levels by slowing down glucose metabolism, but it can decrease androgen levels and inflammation as well. Lignans in flaxseed increase the genesis of sex hormone binding globulin, which binds testosterone in the blood. And omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and assist with brain, joint, eye and skin health. Consume in ground form to reap the benefits. Adding it to smoothies and salads is a simple way to add it to your daily diet.

  1. Royal Jelly

Royal Jelly is considered to be one of the most powerful substances to help balance hormone levels. With an incredible nutrition profile, there are not many things that can improve your hormonal balance as fast as royal jelly.

  1. Adequate Magnesium

Magnesium can help to improve insulin sensitivity. Low levels of this mineral are associated with type 2 diabetes. Studies show that a large percentage of the population are deficient in this mineral (and type 2 diabetes is on the rise, kind of makes you wonder…). Eat or juice more green leafy vegetables, they are an abundant source of magnesium. If you are supplementing, it’s typically recommended to take before bed due to it’s calming effect and ability to aid in digestion (bedtime is the perfect time for your digestion to rest). Epsom salt baths are also a great way to increase your magnesium (1-2 cups in warm water; add in 1 cup baking soda + 10 drops essential oil for a relaxing detox bath).
