8 Things You Should Do When You Get A Cold

I have been working a little more than usual these days and have been maintaining a pretty hectic schedule. Last week, I went to a convention with thousands of other people. The extra germs coupled with a stressed immune system ended up giving me a little head cold.

I haven’t been sick in years, because I practice preventative health measures to keep me well. But, when I do get sick, I immediately break out my bag of holistic tricks to stop a cold in its tracks! I thought I would share those with you, especially considering head cold season is right around the corner.

My 8 Ninja Cold-Fighting Tricks:

1. Elderberry Syrup This sweet berry is naturally high in vitamin C and has been shown to beat colds and flu more quickly. You can find it in health food stores or make your own. I take a teaspoon 2-3 times per day as soon as symptoms begin.

2. Neti Pot Each night, fill a neti pot with a small amount of sea salt (about 1 teaspoon) in warm water to wash out your sinuses. The salt kills bacteria and the warm water flushes out the nasal passages. Nasal irrigation can be an effective way to relieve sinus symptoms. 

3. Essential Oils I love and use high-quality essential oils every day, but when I get sick, my favorites are Oregano and Thyme, Oregano for its anti-viral properties, which I rub on the pores of my feet and Thyme for diffusing and its antimicrobial properties, which can get into every nook and cranny of your lungs to help you breathe. Eucalyptus oil is great for opening airways as well.

4. Bone Broth – Grandma was right when she said to eat some chicken noodle soup, which can boost your immune system and reduce inflammation. I drink 2 cups per day of clear bone broth sprinkled with sea salt.

5. Add Garlic To Your Green Juice Garlic has great anti-viral properties. I add 1 clove to my daily green juice of celery, cucumber, lemon, kale and 1 green apple.

6. Vitamin C – Vitamin C has long been known to support the immune system and fight off colds. Add in some dark, leafy greens, citrus fruits, rosehip tea, or even vitamin C powder into your green smoothie.

7. Restorative Rest – Take a day off and really rest your mind and body. Trying to push through a cold will only prolong it. Go to bed early or take a nap during the day. Curl up with a book, mug of broth or herbal tea and truly relax.

8. Probiotics – 70-80% of your immune system resides in your gut, so making sure you’re populating it with GOOD bacteria is so important! Biotic Balance is a great example of a multi-strain formula with 50 billion of these beneficial little organisms to keep your immune system working FOR you every day.
