8 Secret Ways to Evolve Your Meat and Potatoes Man

There’s nothing wrong with having meat and potatoes on occasion. But when that becomes the food fare every day, it can become a problem long term.  

A steady diet of meat and potatoes can result in an expanded waistline, high cholesterol, high blood pressure or even Type 2 diabetes for some. These are serious issues that may even require medication. A change in nutrition can go a long way towards steering clear of these problems.

Changing a lifelong habit of eating mostly protein and starchy carbs can be tough. But not to fear…

Here are some tricks to help expand your taste buds and set your body up for health and longevity.

1. Avoid Casseroles And One-Dish Meals: Serve a variety of foods on the plate at each meal. Oh, sure, he will eat a one-dish meal, but it’s a psychological thing. One item on the plate may not be satisfying to his brain. His eyes need to see several things on his plate or else you will find him grazing in the pantry not long after dinner – and unless you are really strict with your shopping, those pantry options may not be the best.

2. Ditch The Bread Or Rolls: Many of us grew up expecting some sort of roll or biscuit with every meal. Make this one change and he will find that he can digest his food better and feel less stuffed after dinner. It won’t be long before he stops missing the bread, instead saving these indulgences for special occasions.

3. Add Hearty Veggies In Place Of Red Meat To The Meal: Mushrooms and eggplant are great options. Cabbage can be cut into “steaks.” Zucchini can be made into “boats.” Cauliflower can be made “buffalo style.” Be sure to add plenty of flavor to veggies to avoid food boredom.  Spices, fresh herbs and even slicing the vegetables in a different way can add variety to the dish.

4. Limit The Starchy Carbs: Potatoes, rice, pasta, grits and corn should be limited to a serving size of roughly a clenched fist daily.  Substitute these things instead for cauliflower mash, cauliflower tots, zucchini noodles or quinoa (even quinoa pasta) in place of common gut busters.  

5. Keep Only Healthy Snacks Handy: This eliminates temptation in the home, which is huge!

These are some easy snack ideas that can be great “to-go” too:

  • Raw nuts or seeds.
  • Carrot or celery sticks with a tiny bit of nut butter (almond, cashew or peanut – avoid added sugar or artificial ingredients) or hummus.
  • Fresh fruit with a peel like grapes, apples, oranges, peaches and plums.
  • Dark berries are great for putting your sweet tooth in its place.
  • Dried fruit like raisins, apricots, dates or figs (avoid added sugar or sodium phosphate).
  • Olives, there are a ton of fancy options available.
  • Organic popcorn and sea salt.

 Avoid store-bought snack bars, which are typically loaded with sugar, including those that are organic. If you must grab something on the go, these are some better options.

6.  Keep It To Yourself: If you don’t finish your meal, don’t allow your man to finish it for you. Store your leftovers quickly. Our brains don’t seem to recognize how much we have eaten when it’s not from our own plate.

7. Serve His Plate: Use small plates so it looks like there’s more. If he wants seconds, ask him to get up and get it so that it requires an effort to do so.

8. Turn Off The TV And Sit At The Table: His brain has to register what he is eating so that it can communicate with his stomach to let him know he is full. Mindless eating while watching TV will not allow the brain and stomach to connect. Not to mention, it may be the only time in the day you really get some quality time with your man so take advantage of it and enjoy each other.
