8 Reasons Why You Should Add In A Mobility Routine

Are you stuck in your car during a multi-hour commute? Or do you find yourself constantly cooped up behind a cubicle desk? It’s hard not to sit for most of the day.

The problem is – the body wasn’t designed to spend that much time doing nothing. The body craves to move! Even if it doesn’t feel that way right now.

What Are Mobility Exercises, Exactly?

Mobility exercises (sometimes referred to as self-myofascial release) are targeted movements, usually using a hard tool like a foam roller or a lacrosse ball, that help break down muscle fascia to help increase blood flow to injured or tired muscles.

Basically, if you’ve ever had to go see a physical therapist to help your body heal after an injury, you’re doing a type of mobility exercise.

Each exercise normally takes around 30-60 seconds for each movement and is one of the healthiest ways to keep (or get) your body into incredible, high-performing shape.

You’re less likely to get injured, your body is able to recover fast, and you have more functionality and power from your core muscles (aka, you’ll be stronger and can lift more weight!)

SO, with that said…

Here are 8 reasons why you should add a mobility routine to your daily schedule:  

1. Be More Flexible

It’s pretty obvious that mobility exercises will help you become more flexible. And you never know when that may come in handy.

2. Get A Personalized Massage Every Day

Chances are, you probably don’t have time or money to go to the spa every day for an hour long massage. That doesn’t change the fact that massages can be incredibly beneficial to your physical and mental well-being.

Using a foam roller or a mobility ball to roll out tight painful knots is like having your own personal masseuse at your disposal. You get to control the duration and the pressure. It’s super easy too – you just roll around the part that hurts.

3. Get Rid Of Your Pain

Whoever said that “pain is just weakness leaving the body” must have been doing mobility exercises. If you have chronic pain, especially if it’s pain in the lower back, it may be because you have certain muscles that are too weak. See, when you have two opposing sets of muscles and one side is stronger than the other side, the strong side wins. And chances are, the strong side ends up putting a lot of stress on the weaker side.

This is why most strength coaches will often tell athletes to work opposing muscle groups. For example, if you only work your abs, eventually the abs will be so tight you’ll actually start experiencing pressure on your back. Or if your hips are too tight, your back will get pulled forward and you’ll experience pain in your knees or your lower back.

4. Build More Strength

This really is a continuation of the previous point; the way you get rid of your pain is by becoming more flexible and building strength in your weak areas. Plus, when your muscles and joints are more flexible, you can actually lift more weight!

5. Prevent Injuries

A few mobility exercises before a workout help to warm up your muscles, which inherently helps prevent injuries. You get warmed up, more limber and ready to rock your workout!

6. It’s A Great Part Of A Balanced Morning Routine

The mind LOVES creating habits and streamlining the way you do things. Even when you don’t realize it, you’re creating habits. A quick morning mobility routine helps your body jump start the day in the best way.

7. It’s YOU Time

It’s hard to find time just for yourself, especially if you’re a parent. Mobility routines may not last for long, but it’s a time where you can totally focus on you.

8. Your Body Wants Some (Tough) Love

Sometimes, the things that are the hardest in life are the things that are the most important. Yeah, a few minutes of mobility exercises are not likely to be a walk in the park, but your body will be able to repair itself a lot faster and your body will love you for it.
