Today I want to talk to you about one of my all-time favorite super spices. If you’ve been hanging around FitLife for a while, then you’ve definitely heard me talk about it before. I just can’t get enough of this super spice that has proven itself again and again in my life, the lives of those on the FitLife team and in over 7000 scientific studies conducted all around the world.
History of Turmeric
Legend has it that when baby Jesus was born, wise men from the east brought him gold, frankincense and myrrh.
If you look back at ancient texts, many believe that gold actually refers to a commonly used spice of the time: turmeric.
Not only was turmeric mentioned in the Bible, but Ayurvedic medicine has used it for centuries. There are Chinese records of turmeric use dating back over 2000 years.
Turmeric is not only a flavorful spice, but is also a powerful blood cleanser. When kings would get poisoned, doctors would give them turmeric in hopes of helping them survive. Healers would administer turmeric in order to cleanse a king’s body of poison.
Although turmeric has been known and used successfully all over the world for centuries, it has taken Western Medicine a long time to catch up in understanding and applying turmeric!
It’s only been in the past 30 years that America has started to catch on to the incredible medicinal potential of this ancient spice.
Now there are over 7000 published studies that have shown the benefits of turmeric!
So what does this mean for you?
Modern Day Poison
Last year, 42, 000 new toxins were introduced into our environment.
That’s shocking, to say the least.
Where are all these chemicals coming from?
Well, there are chemicals in our air, toothpaste, shampoo, cleaning products, cosmetics, water, air fresheners and even in our food.
Although some of these chemicals may be harmless, a shockingly large portion of them are not. Many chemicals in our everyday environment are known to disrupt our endocrine system. This is the system responsible for secreting various hormones directly into our bloodstream to be taken throughout our body.
Many commonly used chemicals also disturb your primary organs including your liver, kidney and heart. I don’t think I need to explain to you how important those are to your health and wellbeing!
There are a lot of steps you can take to avoid chemical exposure and you can find a lot of information about that on our blog. But at the end of the day, it is impossible to completely eliminate every harmful toxin from your life. Because of this, it is vitally important to focus on optimizing your health so that you can handle the stress of toxin exposure without getting burdened by chronic illness.

The Amazing Benefits of Turmeric
There are a lot of people worried and wondering about the health crisis in America. They are worried about their own health and the health of their loved ones. Despite phenomenal advances in modern medicine, we, as a nation, are sick.
Whole foods, along with simple healthy lifestyle changes, have the power to revolutionize our health and turn around the wellbeing of people all over the world.
This is why I spend so much time and energy researching and talking about GOOD, REAL FOODS like the vibrant spice we are talking about today.
I’ve read a lot of great books about turmeric, one of my favorites being: Turmeric: The Ayurvedic Spice Of Life by David Frawley and Prashanti De Heger.
In the book, Prashanti gives a list of dozens of different constituents found in turmeric. George Duke from the USDA signed off this list as being accurate!
Turmeric has successfully proven itself (and this is a condensed list!) to be a:
- cancer preventative
- …and much more!
Why aren’t western medical doctors prescribing it? Why aren’t more people using it? It’s because they DON’T REALIZE or UNDERSTAND the power behind whole foods!

Why I Use Turmeric Daily
I use turmeric in one form or another every single day. Why?
It Soothes Inflammation
I work long hours and spend a lot of time moving either from day-to-day tasks or at the gym. I make it a high priority to eat clean but even I am still susceptible to inflammation. Taking turmeric daily helps me keep excess inflammation in check so that I feel my best and avoid illness.
Hundreds of studies have been done on the anti-inflammatory benefits of turmeric. Seeing that the BULK of chronic illness is caused by some sort of inflammation, this is very significant for a lot of people.
According to Dr. Mercola,
“Turmeric has been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory in Chinese and Indian medicine for millennia. Curcumin, the primary pharmacological agent in this spice, contains proven effects in this area that are comparable to over-the-counter anti-inflammatory agents as well as some prescription medications. But curcumin doesn’t produce the toxic effect that synthetic drugs sometimes do, such as ulcer formation, internal bleeding, and even a lowered white blood cell count.”
It Boosts My Mental Health
Turmeric has incredible neuro benefits. I consider myself to be ambitious and in order to pursue my dreams and accomplish daily tasks, I need to stay on top of my game mentally. Taking turmeric daily helps me with mental focus and clarity.
Studies have shown turmeric to have neuroprotective benefits that may treat a variety of ailments including Alzheimer’s disease, tardive dyskinesia, depression, epilepsy and other neurodegenerative disorders.
It Boosts Gut Health
I use to be intolerant to dairy. Although I still don’t use dairy very often, taking turmeric and goat kefir together has helped to heal my gut so that I don’t experience frustrating symptoms when exposed to dairy.
Having a healthy gut has also helped me to have healthy moods. Because some of your most important mood-stabilizing and boosting hormones are in your gut (95% of your serotonin!), keeping your gut healthy is vital to you feeling your best about life.
7 Different Ways To Use Turmeric On A Daily Basis
Here are seven different ways to use turmeric every day!
#1 Turmeric Juice Shot
- ½ inch turmeric root or 1 tsp turmeric powder
- ½ lemon
- sea salt
- Simply juice the lemon and turmeric, combine with a pinch of sea salt and drink! If you don’t have a juicer you can simply use fresh squeezed lemon juice and turmeric powder.

#2 Turmeric Tea
- ½ tsp fresh grated turmeric
- raw honey to taste
- squeeze of lime (makes turmeric more bioavailable)
- dash of black pepper
- 1 cup hot water
- Bring water to a boil, add turmeric and allow to simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and strain. Add remaining ingredients. Enjoy!
#3 Turmeric Soup
- Simmer broth with turmeric for 15 minutes, strain chunks out, add some black pepper (boosts bioavailability) and enjoy.

#4 Turmeric Scramble
- Simply throw some turmeric on your traditional eggs in the morning!

#5 Golden Milk
- 1 cup coconut or almond milk
- ¼ cup water
- 1 tsp turmeric powder/fresh grated
- ¼ tsp ginger powder/fresh grated
- ¼ tsp vanilla
- dash of cardamom
- dash of cinnamon
- dash of clove
- 2 tsp raw honey
- Simmer all ingredients in pot for 1 min
#6 Turmeric Smoothie
- 1 ½ cups frozen pineapple or mango
- 2 tbsp coconut flakes
- ½ coconut or almond milk
- 1 tsp turmeric powder/fresh turmeric
- 1 tsp hemp seed hearts
- 1 tsp maca root
- dash of black pepper
- Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend to perfection. Enjoy!

#7 Turmeric Kefir
- This tastes incredible and is one of my favorite ways to use turmeric. Simply add a tsp or so of turmeric powder to kefir and drink!
