7 Ways To Stop Over-committing Yourself

Written by: Drew Canole

“Time is free. But it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it you can never get it back.” – Harvey Mackay

You can’t say “yes” to everything.

“Well, sure I can Drew. Watch me!”

Okay, you CAN say “yes,” but the important question is… SHOULD YOU?

Before I share with you 7 Ways To Stop Overcommitting Yourself, I want you to listen closely…

Some people are saying “yes” to everything and they don’t even realize it! They don’t know why they are so tired, stressed, spread thin… are you one of them?

Saying yes to everything can lead to OTHER problems like:

  • Overeating
  • feeling down
  • fatigue
  • PREMATURE AGING
  • Relationship issues

When you are OVERCOMMITTED you spread yourself thin and are unable to give 100% to anything you do. That INCLUDES the important people in your life!

Saying NO more often can actually be a HUGE gift to not only yourself, but to others as well.

When you are not able to give 100%, saying no allows you time and space to re-center and connect to yourself so that the next time you CAN say “yes” and feel good about it!

BEFORE YOU SAY YES… ASK YOURSELF:

#1. What Is The Cost?

Everytime you say “YES” to something, you are saying “NO” to something else. When you look at it this way it becomes much easier to prioritize.

If I say “yes” to this then I will have to say “no” to taking the kids to the park…

If I say “yes” to this then I won’t have time to cook healthy meals this week…

Etc.

#2. Am I Saying “Yes” To Prove Something?

over-committing, yes, commitment

Take off the superhero costume.

Are you saying “yes” because people expect you to be wonder woman or superman? Has that become a part of who you are and you’re afraid to lose that? Are you afraid what people will think if you actually say no?

#3. Is This Commitment Realistic?

If you hesitate to this question at all then you should probably seriously reconsider!

#4. How Does This Commitment Make Me Feel?

“Learn to say ‘no’ to the good so that you can say ‘yes’ to the best.” – John C. Maxwell

What feelings come up immediately upon hearing the commitment someone is asking you to take?

If they are negative… resentment, annoyance, depression… those are good indicators that you should say “no.”

#5. Quantity Or Quality?

Is this commitment going to be a QUALITY, worthwhile commitment when placed beside the commitments that are already on your plate?

#6. Is There Another Commitment I Can Drop To Make Room For This One?

over-committing, yes, commitment

If you are busy, choose to say “NO” to any new commitments UNLESS you can exchange them for one you’ve already made.

#7. Do I Want To Say “Yes” So They’ll Like Me?

“The art of leadership is saying ‘no,’ not saying yes. It is very easy to say yes.”

Are you just saying “yes” because you want them to like you? To avoid confrontation?

Most people will take a “no” much better than you expect.

People appreciate honesty.

Summary

over-committing, yes, commitment

Your time is valuable. Treasure it. Treat it like a gift.

Don’t run yourself ragged.

When you are at the end of your life… it won’t be about how “busy” you were…
