7 Things To Give Up If You Want To Be Successful – Mindset Monday
“You are caging the tiger that has controlled your life. It will shake the bars, growl, threaten and cause you some disturbance. I promise you that this period will pass. As you stand firm, it will pass.” – Richard G. Scott
Sometimes finding success isn’t about adding more things into your life… it’s about giving up on all the things that are standing in your way.
Giving up long-term habits that are damaging us can be challenging! It won’t always happen overnight but when you COMMIT to change, you can do anything. Even hard things!
Here are 7 things to give up if you want to be successful in 2017:
#1 Give Up Your Excuses
“He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” – Benjamin Franklin
You know when you say…
- I don’t have enough money
- I don’t have a job
- My last boyfriend cheated on me
- It didn’t work last time
- I’m too tired
- I always fail so why try?
- I don’t have enough time
- I’m too busy
DROP your excuses … stop saying “I can’t” and instead, focus on “How can I make this work?” When you ask the right questions, it empowers you to move forward to what you actually want in life.
#2 Give Up Your Unhealthy Lifestyle
I love you,
I accept you,
I see you.
I promise you cherish you
All the days of my life.”
– Heather Waxman
Become friends with your own body! Stop the hate thoughts, stop the inner-bashing, stop frowning when you look in the mirror. Treat your body with kindness by embracing who you are and making the commitment to live a healthy lifestyle.
When you stop the battle with yourself you will feel better, look better and have WAY more energy to focus on finding SUCCESS.
#3 Give Up Believing In The Magic Formula
“I cannot tell you… how to be rich. But I can tell you how to FEEL rich, which is far better than being rich. Be grateful… it is the only totally reliable get rich quick scheme.” – Ben Stein
There is no get-rich-quick scheme that is worth your time. There is no magic Formula. Stop wasting your time trying to find it. People who are constantly hopping from company to company or scheme to scheme waste a ton of time chasing something they have a .0001% chance of getting.
Instead, invest time in yourself. Read books. Do yoga. Meditate. Find opportunities to serve those in need. Work steadily towards your goals. ANY progress is progress! Remember the fable of The Tortoise and The Hare? Slow and steady wins the race.
In a few years, you will look back on all you’ve accomplished and all the get-rich-quick followers will probably work for you.
#4 Give Up Perfection
“Aim for success, not perfection. Never give up your right to be wrong, because then you will lose the ability to learn new things and move forward with your life.” – Dr. David M. Burns
Perfection is not as stable as you think it is. Perfection changes depending on culture, mood, mindset, crowd… chasing perfection is like the rabbit chasing a carrot on a stick. You’ll never catch it.
Release the need for perfection and instead focus on success.
#5 Give Up Your Need To Control Everything
“Let go of what you can’t control. Channel all that energy into living fully in the now.” – Karen Salmansohn
Some things are up to you, and some things are not up to you.
- The weather
- The actions of another person
- The stock market
- Who won the superbowl
- Your child/spouse/partner having a bad day
- The power going out
All things you do not have control over.
When something comes up in life ask yourself whether it is something in your power to control/change or not. If it’s something you can’t control, detach. Change your focus to something you CAN control.
#6 Give Up Your Social Media Addiction
“Social media sites create an illusion of connectivity.” – Malay Shah
I’m not saying you have to delete Facebook off your phone or cancel your Instagram and Snapchat. I AM saying you should have a day every week where you put away your electronics entirely. I AM saying to PUT your phone away when you are WITH REAL PEOPLE.
At meals, on dates, when you are sitting with someone… DON’T TOUCH YOUR PHONE. Stay real.
#7 Give Up Toxic People
“Ignore people who threaten your joy. Literally, ignore them. Don’t invite any parts of them into your space.” – Alex Elle
You know who they are. They bring you down. You can’t be yourself around them. They suck your energy and vitality. You don’t need that. Let them go. Spend your time with people who inspire you, who love you, and who will build you up and help you get where you want to go.
You don’t have to let go of everything all in one day. But I challenge you to commit to at least ONE of these 7 things you need to let go of this month. Comment below and let me know which one you pick.
