7 Steps to a Balanced Mind, Body and Spirit

I’ll admit, I don’t do all of these every day, but I’m working towards it! I can say this for certain though, whenever I do these daily rituals, I’m much happier and at peace.
It’s important to realize that living healthy is not excluded to only the physical side. Being truly healthy is a balance of the “four core” areas of your life: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.
Here are 7 things you can do NOW to live a healthier life in all four core areas.
1. Eating Healthy/Juicing Vegetables: What if I told you there is a fuel that can bring your life energy and radiance every day? Would you like to know what it is? Well, the intake of the right foods is that fuel. Happiness and overall health begin with giving your body proper nourishment.
Eat More: Whole vegetables and fruits, certain complex carbohydrates (such as sweet potatoes and quinoa), lean and grass fed meat and wild-caught fish will give you the energy you need.
Eat Less: sugar, processed foods, refined carbs (white bread, starches, etc.), junk and fast food.
Along with eating right, juicing organic vegetables will catapult your health to rock star health levels! Juicing has changed my life over the last four years. Since I’ve been juicing, I’ve never suffered from the flu or have had any serious colds. Coincidence? Maybe. But doubtful. Ready to be a juicing rock star? Maybe you already are! (round of applause)
2. Working Out: Your body is moving. Your blood is flowing. And the sweat naturally cools off your body. It’s a great feeling! Exercise is getting your “divine machine” in motion. Once your “divine machine” gets going, your vitality and life energy surge.
You don’t have to run a marathon for movement to be effective. The important thing is to get moving, in any way that you can. It could be as simple as going for a walk everyday.
Studies have shown that walking 20 minutes can dramatically benefit your health and your brain by providing more oxygen and blood flow throughout your body. Jogging, biking, yoga and weight lifting are also great ways to work out.
3. Sleeping: There’s something heavenly about sleep. Think about it: When you are in a dreamless sleep, you are in this unknown void, alive, yet the mind is quiet. You are not thinking about the hours passing by. You are not thinking about the incessant thoughts that plague you during the day when you are awake (errands, job, kids, etc). Quite the contrarily actually, you are in a blank space. This blank space is peaceful. In this peaceful space, energy flows back to you. Your body heals. Your body recharges.
People underestimate sleep. Don’t let yourself do so. Get 7-8 hours of sleep per night, or more if you know that’s what your body needs. Be intentional with your sleep.
- Get black out drapes for your bedroom or an eye mask
- Make sure there is 100% silence or get earplugs
- Avoid distractions that can take away from sleep (i.e. late night web/social media surfing)
- Try using lavender oil on the bottoms of your feet or in a diffuser to help calm and relax your mind and body
4. Meditation: Meditation vitalizes, recharges and clears your mind. I’ve heard meditation metaphorically called a warm bath for your brain. I’ll go a step further and call it a full day at the spa for your brain.
Take a few minutes for yourself. Put your phone on airplane mode. Maybe play some soft, calming music. Take a few deep breaths. Sit up straight with good posture, hands comfortable. Listen to your breath. Feel your breath go in as you inhale. Feel the air leave you as you exhale. Thoughts will come. Let them go. Meditation is not meant to be perfect.
Imperfection in meditation, I believe, should even be encouraged.
Start small. You do not have to have to be a Buddhist monk. Investing just 3-5 minutes of sitting straight and breathing will help you gain a sense of calm and control. You will gain a sense of peace during your busy day and this will lead to a healthier life – and more peaceful mind.
5. Gratitude: One of my favorite quotes is by Eckhart Tolle, which states, “Acknowledging the good that you already have in you life is the foundation for all abundance.”
Gratitude equals abundance. Plain and simple. You can start feeling abundance today by exuding gratitude.
A great way to do this is by writing down 5 things you are grateful for each day. Focus on the good already in your life and more good will come. Conversely, if you focus on what you lack, you will lack more in your life. What are you grateful for right now?
6. Be Surrounded By Quality People: This may be the most important aspect of emotional health. Make it your number one priority to find people who authentically love and respect you. Likewise, you should feel the same for them. You will be happier and healthier when you’re around people who enjoy your company and in turn, are enjoyed by you.
You may need to remove some of the negative people in your life… this is often easier said than done. You don’t necessary have to cut these people off right away, however, it is important you set limits with the time you are going to spend with people that don’t have a positive and empowering effect on you. Remember the “Law of Five”: You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Choose wisely and your environment and life with become much more enjoyable.
7. Seek Inspiration: Reading opens up your mind to what you might be closed off to. It’s exercise for the brain. Through reading and seeking inspiration, I’ve been able to change my mental state and get out of bad moods.
I’ve also been inspired through reading to create inspiring work. Making reading a habit will continuously keep your mindset focused towards happiness and growth.
BONUS: HAVE FUN and LAUGH!
Be goofy, be weird and always remember to laugh! Remember not to take life too seriously, or yourself, for that matter. Watch your favorite comedian on YouTube. Have a laugh with your family or close friends next time you see them. Laughing is healthy and should be done often.
