7 Spring Cleaning Kitchen Tips to Spring Clean Your Body

Spring symbolizes rebirth, life, purity and vitality. In Spring time, everything is being reborn again – the grass is becoming green, flower buds are popping out and baby squirrels are running around.

Spring cleaning on a mind-body-soul level can be looked at just as Spring cleaning of your home. It means getting rid of old stuff, including emotional garbage and unused household items, to make room for the new.

Though cleansing, renewal and healing should always happen on the mind-body-soul level, taking care of your body is an important place to start and often the most necessary step for many.

A healthy body provides a foundation to a healthy mind and a happy soul. No wonder so many of us are cleansing – or at least making an effort to clean up our diets and get out and exercise when Spring comes around!

To set yourself up for success on both a home and mind-body-soul level, it is necessary to have a well-stocked pantry and fridge.

So What Should A Healthy Kitchen Include?

1. Fruits And Vegetables

It doesn’t matter what your dietary needs and ideas are, the foundation of every healthy diet is nutrient-dense and colorful fruits and vegetables. It is best to buy organic whenever possible, but always keep in mind the list of the dirty dozen and clean 15. To support your local farmers, shop at your local farmer’s market if possible. Buying seasonally also ensures the best quality and freshness (these items are also less expensive). Store your fruits and veggies on the counter and in your fridge.

Hemp seeds are by far my favorite seeds and are an amazing superfood. Hemp seeds are a complete protein source, an excellent source of omega-3-s and rich in fiber. Chia seeds and flax seeds are similarly amazing choices for omega-3. Chia seeds have 2.5 times more protein than kidney beans, 3 times more iron than spinach and 15 times more magnesium than broccoli. Pumpkin seeds are a great source of Vitamin B, whereas sesame seeds are rich in calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and phosphorus. Seeds can be enjoyed on salads, in granola, in smoothies or even as spreads. Tahini for example is an excellent way to enjoy your sesame seeds.

3. Beans

Beans are an excellent source of plant-based protein. If you are new to beans, start with the beans that are smaller in size, like split peas or adzuki beans. To further improve digestion, it is best to soak them overnight. They can be used in soups, salads, purees, or spreads.

4. Coconut Oil

Unrefined and organic coconut oil is probably the best cooking oil out there full of amazing health benefits. Coconut oil is rich in medium-chained triglycerides that breaks down similarly to carbohydrates. Coconut oil helps increase energy, burn fat, fight candida (and other fungi), bacteria, viruses and infections and it helps improve cholesterol. It is also great as a skin moisturizer.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar has many health benefits. It is a potent antimicrobial that helps fight many bad bacteria. It helps lower and balance blood sugar levels, benefiting diabetics and those fighting sugar addictions. It is excellent in fighting candida. Apple Cider Vinegar has been shown to aid weight loss, protect against cancer and benefit heart health.

Eating healthy doesn’t have to be flavorless and boring. Use a variety of spices to add flavor to your meals without extra calories or an overdose of salt. They all have their specific benefits. Cinnamon, for example, is loaded with antioxidants, protective against cancer, lowers blood sugar and fights bacteria. Ginger has amazing anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties and fights motion sickness, upset stomachs, diarrhea, nausea and other stomach complaints. Black pepper has proven itself to have antioxidant and antibacterial effects and is also great for stomach problems. The list of amazing benefits of each spice goes on. You will be amazed if you read into it.

7. Water

This may be strange to you to put this on the list, but drinking water is important. Don’t substitute water for caffeinated tea, coffee, juices or sodas. Make sure to aim to drink ½ your body weight in ounces of clean water a day (ex: 150 pound person should aim for 70 ounces daily). Since sugar cravings can be a sign of dehydration, it is always good to drink a glass of water first to see what happens before reaching for the cookie jar. Spring water, artesian water, mineral water and purified water are all good choices and, if you so choose, you can even drink alkaline water for extra benefits. Just keep hydrated.
