7 Easy Ways To Stay Healthy Through The Holidays

It can often be hard to make good choices during the holidays. With all the decadent sweet confections and savoury meals surrounding you, your healthy eating can easily take a backseat.

You still have at least two weeks of holiday festivities and so today, I want to share 7 easy ways to stay healthy through the holidays. Implement them into your day to day life and you can have some great new habits developed by the end of this season that can continue to carry you forward into the new year.

1. Breakfast Is The Most Important Meal Of The Day

Starting your day with a protein shake is a great way to get your day started right. Try my favorite protein shake for a delicious breakfast.

Simply blend:

  • Non-soy or non-dairy protein powder
  • Spinach
  • Frozen fruit (I love mango and pineapple, but any fruit will do)
  • 1 tbsp of hemp seeds or flaxseeds
  • Unsweetened coconut or almond milk

2. Do Not Let Yourself Get Hungry

It is easy to believe that not eating can lead to weight loss, but that is quite the contrary. Not eating and letting yourself get hungry has a negative impact on your waistline and – well, let’s be honest – a larger waist is a bigger cause for anxiety and stress.

It is important to ensure that you eat consistently. Begin your day with a healthy protein shake and throughout the day, eat lean protein, healthy fats and slow-burning carbs like quinoa or sweet potato every 4-6 hours.

3. Exercise

I can understand that you have a boat load of things to check off your to-do list. It is easy to let your workout routine take a back seat. Instead of considering your workout as a burden, look at it as a time for yourself, a time to release and a time refocus. Ask those around you to help keep you accountable to ensure that you get your exercise in.

4. Get Quality Sleep

Not getting quality sleep can lead to hunger, cravings and unnecessarily caffeinated morning. It is important to prioritize 7-9 hours of quality, uninterrupted sleep.

5. Keep Your Home A “No Sweets Zone”

This one is hard for me, especially on non-holiday days. I work on keeping my home a no-temptation zone by keeping the sweets that are hard for me to resist snacking on out and away from me. Whatever your temptation may be, if you ever feel the beckoning allure, drink a glass of water – this can oftentimes wash out the craving and help you feel satiated.

6. Employ The Three Bites Rule

You find yourself holding a container full of decadent chewy brownies – you know, the ones with tasty nuts? – and your mouth instantly waters. You know you want one, so here is a great rule to live by: if you just cannot help yourself, limit yourself to three bites. That is enough to sate your craving and keep you from derailing your healthful efforts.

7. Keep A Food Journal

Keeping track of what you eat is a great and easy way to troubleshoot overeating and food intolerance that can lead to weight-loss resistance. It gives you a precise picture of what you are consuming and can help give you an idea of what types of foods your body disagrees with.
