6 Tips For Running In The Rain

To all my runners out there – I am sure that you saw the cold and wet conditions the 2015 Boston Marathon runners faced and as a runner, you know that being prepared for weather is key to having a successful and – most importantly – enjoyable run.

As we get into the colder months, this is especially important as the potential for getting sick increases as you run and sweating opens you up to the elements. Dressing for the rainy and cold days can be a challenge, but developing a flexible running wardrobe will cover you during all kinds of cold, wet runs and races.

Here are some suggestions on what to wear when the cold comes and the rain starts pouring down:

1. Hat Or Visor: Wearing a hat or visor with a brim will keep the rain out of your eyes. For cold, rainy runs in the 30s – 40s, consider wearing a light beanie or headband for warmth. A waterproof cap can help keep your head warm and  dry. You can also wear a shower cap over your hat or visor – it is kind of funny looking, but very effective. If it is above 55 degrees, visors are great, because they allow heat to escape more efficiently.

2. Eyewear: If the rain is consistent, wear a pair of light-tinted or clear glasses that can help protect your eyes from getting pelted. Also, a good anti-fog lens cleaner will help keep your vision clear of the moisture and humidity.

3. Jacket, Vest, Or Trash Bag: Invest in a lightweight waterproof shell jacket to stay dry on cold, rainy runs and during other rainy day activities. For warmer rainy runs, try an ultra lightweight, rain-resistant running jacket or vest. You may also use a large garbage bag, cutting holes for your arms and your head.

4. Lightweight Wicking Apparel In Dark Colours: Wicking apparel is great for runs as it pulls moisture away from your skin – this helps prevent chafing and blisters. For me, that is truly a bonus as my skin is so sensitive. Tighter tops and bottoms are better to avoid chaffing. Ladies, light coloured bras, tops and bottoms become see through when wet, so stick to darker colors in the rain.

5. Wicking Socks: To me, these are a God-send. Wearing a pair of wicking socks can make all the difference in preventing blisters from developing. And let’s be honest, no-one wants blistered feet.

6. Lube: Anti-chafe balm or petroleum jelly on your feet will help prevent blisters and on any other body part that may chafe such as your arms, nipples (ouch), legs, sports bra seam lines (for my ladies), etc.  

*Note: After your run, get out of your wet clothes and shoes as quickly as possible. To help your shoes dry, remove the insoles and stuff the shoes with newspaper or paper towels as well as laying your insoles on newspaper to dry. If you want to go the extra mile, you can remove your shoestrings as well.
