6 Steps To Turn Your Passion Into Purpose

It is probably safe to say that the majority of us are not following our passion in life. Passion can be defined as a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement about doing something.
Do you wake up excited to go to work, ready to carpe diem (seize the day), to change the world? Or do you wake up dragging, not wanting to get out of bed and dreading your life? Either way, there is hope in turning your passion, your fire and your energy into your purpose.
What is your life’s purpose, anyway? Your purpose is your motive or motivation for life, your cause, your reason for being. It is what makes you thrive, what makes you exist, what makes you YOU. Everyone is on his or her own path and everyone’s purpose is unique to them.
If you want to set your soul on fire and live a fulfilling life, try to follow these 6 steps to turn your passion into your purpose. Know that you posses the power to live your truth and create the life that you have always wanted. It starts with taking the first step…
- Define your passion.
So what is it that sets your soul on fire? What do you LOVE doing? What makes you feel alive? What do you wish you could do every day for the rest of your life, regardless of money? Grab a piece of paper and write down anything and everything that comes to mind. It could be as simple as “working out” or “helping others in need.” Maybe it’s painting or dancing. No goal is unattainable and no passion is unrealistic.
- Eliminate FEAR.
Once you have defined your passion, you must eliminate fear and instead, approach life with love and enthusiasm. Many people don’t turn their dreams into reality because of fear – fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of change. If you can learn to cultivate all of your fears into a positive experience, you will be open and ready for change. So instead of fearing the unknown, cultivate curiosity. Instead of fearing failure, envision your success. Instead of fearing change, embrace it with open arms. To truly find and follow your passion, you must let down your guard and be vulnerable to transformation and all that comes along with it.
- Eliminate expectations.
William Shakespeare said, “expectation is the root of all heartache.” He has a point. If you have expectations, then you set yourself up for disappointment. So let go of all expectations – expectations of where you should be in life, how much money you should be making, what you should be doing, or what society thinks you should be doing. Let go of expectation and instead appreciate everything as it comes. If you are following your passion and living your purpose, your life will naturally start to align.
- Define your strengths and how they relate to your passion.
Once you have defined your passion and eliminated your fears and expectations of the future, you can then start to make things happen. So get out that same piece of paper and pen and write down all of your strengths. Begin with the words “I AM” and let all of your positive qualities flow from your mind. I am confident, I am kind, I am generous, I am good with words, I am good with people… Once you have written down your strengths, draw a line and connect the dots to all that can relate to your passion. Ask yourself how your skills, talents and personality contribute to your passion. Write down your answers.
- Make a plan. Create a vision. Write it down.
After celebrating your strengths, devise a plan at how you can turn your passion into your purpose. This is where you can write down your goals. “I want to teach yoga,” or “I want to become a firefighter.”
After setting your goals, write down what steps you need to take to accomplish them. “I have to complete a 200 hour Yoga Teaching Training Course,” or “I have to first volunteer as a firefighter and then undergo extensive training.”
After outlining the steps you need to take to achieve your goals, come up with a timeline. Maybe this month you will make a commitment to accomplish step #1, or perhaps you have time to tackle 3 steps at a time. Whatever your timeline is, make it realistic to your abilities and your availability.
- Every day take 1 step towards fulfilling your purpose.
Whether you decide to create a vision board with words and images, or just write down your goals on a piece of paper, place it somewhere you can see it on a daily basis. Then every day, take 1 step towards your purpose. And when you do, devote every inch of your heart and soul to your vision, your dream and your future and watch your life radically change as you begin to live your truth.
