5 Tips To Switch To Alkaline Eating
Written by: Kavata Kithome
Any health professional will tell you that balanced pH levels are key in optimum health. When your body is more acidic than alkaline on the pH scale, you are probably suffering with health problems.
When your body is acidic, it means that you have acidic blood, which is toxic to your cells. When your cells are compromised, they can’t fight bacteria or carry life-giving oxygen around your body properly. Less oxygen means less energy and other health issues.
The good news is that you can easily and affordably repair and restore this unbalanced and dangerous state.
It is important to begin reducing the things that create an acidic environment. One easy way to do this is to reduce emotional stress.
You can easily get caught up in the hustle and bustle of your go-go-go life; you just need to realize how important it is to take a moment and slow down. You can put mindfulness meditation and gentle exercise on your daily schedule to help with this. You can also make time to for self-care, like taking long baths, or journaling to help ease your mind and body.
The next easiest thing that you can do is begin removing foods that are inflammatory. These foods exacerbate acidity in the body, while adding foods that help your body become more and more alkaline can reverse this.
With that in mind, here are 5 tips to help you switch to alkaline eating.
1. Drink Lemon Water
I am sure that by now, you have heard this over and over again. But it is a worthy mention, as lemon helps you stay hydrated and detoxify your liver. Lemon is a great fruit for promoting alkalinity in your body. Simply drop a slice of lemon in your water, or squeeze about ¼ – ½ lemon in warm water and drink it first thing in the morning.
2. Understand The Acid/Alkaline Chart
The best way to do this is to simply print it out and stick on your fridge. Begin by focusing on eating the foods on the alkaline list and have fun with it by maybe adding one alkaline food to each meal in the day.
3. De-Clutter Your Kitchen
As a health coach, this is first thing I encourage my clients to do. It is a secret that I teach all of my clients and I want to share the secret with you too. Start with your shopping lists and clean out your fridge and pantry of all processed foods; refer to your acid/alkaline chart as a guide. As the saying goes, “out of sight, out of mind.”
4. Focus On Eating Something Green At Every Meal
Just by adding something green to each meal, you are well on your way to alkalizing your body. Throw some spinach in your omelet or smoothie in the morning, add some sautéed veggies to your lunch, eat a salad for lunch, snack on some celery, add some blanched or steamed veggies for dinner. The goal here is to eat more veggies in particular.
5. Plan Your Meals
My mother was so meticulous in everything she did. I remember how she would plan the week’s meals before she would even go grocery shopping. This kept her from spending money unnecessarily, but aside from that, she was able to monitor our food and was able to ensure that her family got all their dietary needs met.
I now see the wisdom in how she did things. I am always preparing, because with proper planning and preparation, you alleviate temptation and self-sabotage.
This the best way to take charge of your body, weight and, most importantly, health. My day of thorough preparation is Saturday; this is when I prep my juices, soups and all the meals of the week to come.
As a health coach, I am a big believer in beginning where you are with what you have and taking small steps towards your goal. With that in mind, here are two BONUS tips that I would like to share with you:
1. Invest In Tools To Make Your Alkaline Ventures Easier
Just like a hammer makes a carpenter’s work easier, there are certain tools that can make your alkaline ventures easier. A blender is a great tool to have, because you can quickly blend a nutrient dense smoothie and it makes everything so much easier.
2. Find One Alkaline Recipe That You LOVE
If you have a blender, this tip is just for you! Finding a great alkaline recipe can really help you to stay on track, especially if you drink juices or smoothies in the morning.
My favorite recipe is this glowing green smoothie: it is nutrient dense, can replace a meal, alkalizes you and, most importantly, is so delicious – it almost feels like you are cheating.
Try these tips and share your experiences with us in the comments below, we would love to hear from you!
