Ladies, this one’s for you.

I’ve pulled together a few of my favorite superfoods that are particularly beneficial to women. I know you spend a lot of time making food for your families and trying to keep everyone as healthy as possible. It is important not to lose yourself in the process!

These foods are packed full of vitamins, minerals and amino acids that can help you with anything from PMS to menopause to anxiety. Put some space for yourself on that grocery list and give some of these a try!

Oat Grass

New Picture (1)What’s Inside

Vitamins A, C, E, and K, pantothenic acid, chlorophyll, lecithin calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, amino acids

Health Benefits

Oat grass is high in calcium and minerals that can help bone strength. It is also thought that oat grass has a relaxing effect on the nervous system and can be used to soothe anxiety.

Oat grass may have some particularly good benefits for women – easing the symptoms of stress, depression, exhaustion, anxiety and accompanying symptoms, menopause, estrogen deficiency, etc.

Oat grass has a powerful antioxidant called tricin which is believed to soothe and relax tense muscles. This makes it useful for gastrointestinal issues like cramping and bloating.

How to eat them

The best way to eat oats is to eat them in their grass form. It may be easier to eat oatmeal or baked goods, but give the grass a try and see what difference it makes. Because we can’t digest oat grass in its whole form, we need to juice or pulverize it in order to metabolize the nutrients.

Pumpkin Seeds

What’s Inside

Magnesium, protein, manganese, zinc, Omega-3 fats, copper, fiber, iron, potassium, zinc, vitamins E and K

Health Benefits

The high magnesium content of pumpkin seeds does wonders for the body like helping the creation of ATP, bowel function, blood vessel relaxation, formation of bones and teeth and the synthesis of RNA and DNA. According to Dr. Mercola, an estimated 80 percent of Americans are deficient in magnesium! Each ounce of seeds also provides 9 grams of protein.

The oil from pumpkin seeds is rich in phytoestrogens that help women in post-menopausal stages with symptoms like hot flashes, headaches, joint pain, etc.

Animal studies have been done that suggest pumpkin seeds may help decrease oxidative stress and help with insulin regulation. Studies have also shown that pumpkin seed oil works just as well as the anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin, without the side effects.

How to eat them

You can chew on pumpkin seeds by themselves, preferably raw. This ensures that all the healthy fats and nutrients are still at their highest potency. For even better results, you can soak pumpkin seeds overnight, or sprout them. If you don’t like them raw you can try them dehydrated, or roast them at home for 15-20 minutes at no hotter than 170 degrees F.

White Maca Powder

What’s Inside

Vitamin B, C, E, calcium, zinc, magnesium, phosphorus, amino acids, iron

New Picture (3)

Health Benefits

Maca root enhances endocrine function. The endocrine system includes all of the glands in the body and the hormones they secrete. These hormones control things like fertility, desire, digestion, brain and nervous system physiology and energy levels.

Women have found that taking maca root helps to relieve menstrual or menopausal symptoms. Both men and women have taken it to improve time spent in the bedroom.

How to eat it

Since maca root only grows in high altitudes, you will most likely find it in capsule or powder form. It tastes a bit like maple or butterscotch with a slightly bitter aftertaste. It is good when mixed with nutty flavors like peanut/almond butter or cashew cream, dark chocolate, or pure maple syrup. You can also throw it into a smoothie.

What’s inside

Chlorophyll, protein, iron, Vitamin C, D, A, E, B12, all amino acids, folic acid, potassium, calcium

New Picture (4)Health Benefits

Spirulina is extremely high in chlorophyll, which is a natural detoxifier and cleanser that removes foreign material (heavy metals, toxins etc) from the body. It also boosts the immune system. It is often recommended by health practitioners to vegetarians and pregnant women because of its high concentration of iron.

It has 26 times the calcium of milk!

How to eat them

Always choose organic or you risk eating Spirulina with additives. Most people take it in powder form by adding it to smoothies or juices. It generally tastes like pond water and is best when mixed with other fruits and veggies. Add to chilled coconut water for a great energy boost! We put spirulina in our Organifi Green Juice Powder.

Dark Chocolate

What’s Inside

Polyphenols, flavonols, fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, selenium

New Picture (5)Health Benefits

Dark chocolate is known to boost mood (but who didn’t know that?) The flavanols in dark chocolate may also be good for protecting your skin against sun damage.

Studies have shown that consuming high-flavanol cocoa improves blood flow to the brain thus improving brain function.

Dark chocolate is also known as The Love Drug. Once consumed chocolate affects the brain, giving a sense of delight and pleasure no other food can match. Studies show it decreases stress in women while increasing levels of serotonin (the feel-good chemical) and is thought to put people in the mood for love. The effect may be even stronger for women as they naturally have higher levels of serotonin compared to men. Chocolate also has a compound called phenylethylamine (PEA). PEA triggers the release of endorphins and dopamine, both compounds/chemicals associated with pleasure and arousal.

How to eat them:

I don’t think you need any help here. 🙂 My only advice is to look for dark chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa solids.
