5 Steps To Smash Your Fears And Overcome Anxiety – Mindset Monday
POSTED ON June 6, 2016 BY Drew Canole
“When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find it comes off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
What is one of the biggest things holding you back from success?
Think about that for just a moment.
What is holding you back from reaching your goals?
…from being the person you were meant to be?
…from taking risks?
…from living the life you really want to live?
I can tell you exactly what is holding you back from all of these things.
That might seem like a pretty bold statement, but trust me when I tell you – I’ve been in a similar place that you might be in right now.
I was working a job to make money but I wasn’t really PASSIONATE about it. I was overweight, tired, partying on the weekends so that I could “let loose” and try to feel like I was actually happy about my life.
But in all reality I wasn’t happy. I was sort of depressed. I was just kind of living the way that most of the people around me were living. Waking up. Going to work. Coming home. Doing… well, doing whatever and then going to bed only to wake up and do it all over again.
I was surviving but not thriving. And there’s a HUGE difference between those two things.
Maybe this scenario doesn’t fit you exactly but I bet you relate to one of the following emotions:
Fear keeps us from making that leap from ordinary to extraordinary.
Fear is that voice in our head that keeps telling us we’re not good enough.
If you let fear rule your life, you will never reach your full potential and live the life of your dreams.
Here are a few tips to help you SMASH your fears and overcome anxiety!
#1 Shine A Bright Light On What Scares You
When a little kid is afraid of monsters in the closet, what do you do to help them feel better? You grab a big flashlight and shine it in the dark, of course. And hopefully when you do this, shadows disappear and so do any trace of monsters!
We can do the same thing as adults. When you’re afraid of something… research the crap out of it. KNOWLEDGE WILL GIVE YOU POWER OVER YOUR FEARS. When you understand the things that scare you, they are much less likely to be sources of fear.
#2 Jump Off The Panic Train
The mediais just about the worst place to go when you want to feel peace about your life because guess what? They make money when people freak out! They make money off of people’s fears! Scary headlines sell a lot better than quiet ones. Stop buying into “herd panic” and be smarter than the media.
When some piece of information comes your way, focus on FACTS. Dig up claims or speculation to see if they have any backing. Remember that people can say ANYTHING but it doesn’t mean it is true.
Sometimes our thoughts tend to act like the media, especially when we are having a moment of anxiety. We come up with all kind of horrible worse-case scenarios in our head and we give them our focus. Don’t do this.
Breathe. And focus on facts.
#3 Have A Support Team
Find people who know how to listen and that are HONEST. Tell them your fears and anxieties and let them give you honest feedback. Because they are not living in your head they can give you a third-party perspective. They can tell you if there is an actual mountain in your path or if you are just looking at a small rock too closely.
Draw courage from your support team. They have confidence in you. And you can feed off of that to fuel your own when the going is tough.
#4 Accomplish A “Fear Smasher” Every Day
This is an excellent way to boost daily confidence and moral!
What builds confidence like nothing else? ACCOMPLISHMENT. It’s why psychologists say making your bed first thing every morning is beneficial because it immediately gives you an accomplishment to check off your list, making you more likely to accomplish other goals you set for the day.
Every night before you go to sleep and are thinking about the next day, choose ONE THING that will be your “Fear Smasher”. Something that you are a little apprehensive about like connecting with an old friend, writing an apology note, reading a book about something unfamiliar, going to that new gym you’ve been wanting to try, joining a club, walking around with a “free hugs” sign, etc.
When you start doing these things every day, you will look back on things that used to scare the daylights out of you and think, “I can’t believe that use to scare me!”
#5 Make Health A High Priority
Let’s face it, if you feel weak, too big or too small, tired or stress, bogged down, often sick… you’re going to have more anxiety and confidence issues. When your body is physically fatigued you won’t have the strength to face even the most basic of your fears.
Both dopamine and serotonin (feel good hormones) are synthesized largely in the gut, so if you aren’t taking care of it by eating healthy and moving your body then you will have a harder time feeling good. Studies have shown that a healthy gut is linked to a lower risk for anxiety and depression.
Focus on becoming physically and mentally strong. Eat good foods and take care of your gut.
I find that the more I face my fears, the more I do things that I think are “scary”, the more opportunities open up for me and the more my life expands into something greater than I could have ever hoped for.
Don’t spend your time hiding only to look back at a life that was “safe” and “comfortable”.
You will not regret the things you do in life so much as the things you DON’T do.

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
