5 Steps to Avoiding Sickness All Year ‘Round
By Shannon Lagasse
This time of year, it seems like everyone in the office is out sick. Your kids are coming home ill, people are coughing and sneezing everywhere you turn and getting the flu seems unavoidable.
But there is something you can do to keep yourself from getting sick, no matter what kind of germs you’re exposed to on a daily basis.
Don’t believe me? Read on, my friend. These tips are GOLD, I promise!
Here are some health coach-approved tips, strategies and recipes you can use to stay healthy all season while those around are you coughing, sleeping and wiping their noses.
1. Olive Leaf Extract
This slightly sweet – but by no means, tasty – liquid is great for boosting immunity. Olive leaf extract boasts a number of health benefits, including anti-inflammatory effects, but its main superpower is its antibacterial properties. By taking olive leaf extract, you can resist bacterial infections and viruses from the inside out. Take 1 tablespoon with food for optimal results.
2. Reduce Your Stress
Most of you are likely pushing long hours, referencing your to do lists for things you can check off in your free time. This kind of stress and pressure compromises your immunity, making you much more susceptible to catching that sniffle or sore throat that’s going around. Take some time for yourself to rest, restore and rejuvenate your body by getting more sleep at night, or sneaking in a nap during the day. You can also use mindfulness activities such as yoga, tai chi, meditation, or qi gong to lower stress during the waking hours.
3. Eat & Live Clean
Mom was right when she said that you’d get healthy by eating your fruits and vegetables. Incorporating more leafy greens, fruits, vegetables and clean sources of protein in your diet will help to keep your body healthy so it can fight off any potential infections. By keeping your diet rich in antioxidants and low in toxic foods (meaning processed and packaged foods), you lower your chances of getting sick significantly.
4. Boost Your Immune System with Probiotics
This is every health coach’s back pocket tool. A low immune system is a sign of a weak gut. One of the best ways to boost your gut health is by replenishing the healthy gut flora with probiotics, which you can find in fermented foods and beverages or purchase in pill form for a quick fix. Taking your daily dose of probiotics is sure-fire way to reduce the number of office visits and sick days you experience this season.
I recommend a multi-strain formula with at least 10 different strains of healthy bacteria. Aim for at least 10 billion CFU’s (colony forming units) per serving, more if you’re taking antibiotics or experience leaky gut or active autoimmune conditions.
5. Healthy Shots
In my home, we make what I call “healthy shots.” These are powerful shots of liquid that will help you kick that cold to the curb. This is what we make when someone has the sniffles coming on or just generally feels like crap. Anyone who walks in the door complaining about being sick gets a shot glass full of this potent combination. And it works!
Here’s to staying healthy, all season long!
- ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1 tbsp raw, local honey
- 1 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar
- 1 cup spring water
- Combine all in a glass jar with lid and shake well.
- Be warned: This is very spicy! Add some 100% apple juice for sweetness or follow with a chaser of water.
