5 Reasons To Eat More Figs

I remember being a kid and how my grandparents had a fig tree in their backyard. I remember waiting for that first “cool snap” when it was time to gather figs off the tree. I can remember their taste: so sweet and so soft.
Little did I know that figs are actually very GOOD for your body. In fact, figs account for 25 grams of your daily recommended amount of fiber, which is 20 to 30 grams each day. Figs are also loaded with other nutrients and essential vitamins that your body needs.
Here are some of the top benefits of eating figs:
1. Figs Are Good For Heart Health. They are loaded with potassium, which helps control your blood pressure. Consuming enough potassium rich foods can lower your blood pressure and lower your risk for blood clots or a stroke.
Another reason that figs are good for heart health is that they help in lowering the “bad” cholesterol and prevent it from building in your arteries, potentially causing a heart attack.
2. Figs Help Your Bones. Figs are rich in calcium, which is needed in order to strengthen your bones and lower your risk of osteoporosis in the future. Figs also contain phosphorus, which aids in bone formation and regrowth of the bone if there were to be any damage to it.
3. Figs Are High In Iron. Iron is a mineral that helps create your red blood cells and prevents anemia, which is what happens when you body is low on red blood cells. Iron is responsible for transporting oxygen from your lungs and all throughout your body.
Without an adequate amount of iron in your body, you can feel constantly drained and low levels can affect your immune system and even the function of your brain.
4. Figs Help You Lose Weight. Figs are a great source of dietary fiber, which helps you to lose weight. A large, raw fig gives you 1.9 grams of your daily recommended dietary fiber, which is about 8% of what you need on a daily basis.
The sweet taste of figs are great at satisfying your sweet tooth. Instead of reaching for that candy bar or cupcake, pick up a few figs and see how much more satisfied you will be after eating them!
5. Figs Lower And Stabilize Blood Sugar Levels. The fiber that is found in figs not only helps you to lose weight by providing you a sweet treat and making you feel full, but they also help to lower and stabilize blood sugar levels.
Figs contain both soluble and insoluble fiber. The soluble fiber helps keep you feeling full for longer while the insoluble fiber provides “bulk” to help cleanse your large intestine and reduce constipation.
One of the most common reasons why many people do not eat figs is because they are not sure exactly what they can do with them. There are many different ways that you can incorporate figs into your daily diet. Since figs are naturally sweet, they can be added into pretty much anything to replace processed and refined sugar. Try adding figs to your cereal and oatmeal. You can even smash some up and mix them with mashed potatoes or rice to get your added daily need of fiber and iron.
