5 Powerful Natural Antibiotics You Can Afford
Fall is here, winter is coming and the colder season illnesses are becoming more common, increasing your chances of getting sick.
Of course, when you take care of your body, eat well (consuming plenty of nutritious whole foods), sleep enough (8 hours or more), avoid (or minimize) stress, exercise and think positive thoughts, you will have higher chances of preventing an illness.
There are no guarantees though and even when living the healthiest lifestyle possible, chances are that at one point you will get a small cold or perhaps a stomach bug.
In our modern society, when people get sick, they run to their doctor and will likely be prescribed antibiotics – even if it is a viral infection, “just in case.” Pharmaceutical antibiotics are the most over-prescribed medicines today. The result of frequent use and overuse of antibiotics is devastating and lead to ruined digestive systems and lowered immunity.
That’s right, antibiotics can lower your immunity, increasing your chances of being sick again, then being prescribed more antibiotics just to compromise your immune system even more… it’s a vicious cycle.
But you don’t have to take pharmaceutical antibiotics even when you are sick. There are some fantastic, easily available, affordable and completely natural antibiotics out there for you that will help you get back on your feet in no time. I can’t emphasize it enough that a healthy lifestyle – whole foods, sleep, relaxation, positive thinking, exercise – will help you not only to prevent illnesses, but to also repair your body if you do get sick.
Here are the top 5 natural antibiotics:
Garlic has been used across cultures for thousands of years; for example, in the 1700s it was used to ward off the plague. Garlic is not only an antibiotic, but also an antiviral, antifungal, antimicrobial and antioxidant and will attack all the bad guys while supporting your immune system. You can spice your dishes with garlic, add it to your salads and if you are brave, juice it or eat it as is.
Colloidal silver was discovered in the 1900s by Alfred Searle. It can pretty much kill all deadly pathogens, according to his research. Recent research had also found that it destroys the bird flu, SARS and MRSA. It can kill parasites, fungi, viruses and bacteria. You can find it in your health food stores.
Oil of oregano is my favorite and it literally kills everything. It fights the pathogenic bacteria in your system without disrupting the healthy and beneficial bacteria you need. It is also antiviral and antifungal, so you don’t even have to guess what kind of infection you have.
A drop under your tongue can help and often stop colds and throat infections. Oil of oregano pills are great for stomach problems, including traveller’s diarrhea. You can buy it at a health food store or online. Make sure to buy a good brand, rather than cheaper varieties, as they tend to be more potent.
Echinacea has been used for hundreds of years to aid a variety of illnesses and infections, including blood poisoning, open wounds, diphtheria and all sorts of bacterial illnesses. It is highly effective fighting colds and flu and is able to destroy the staphylococcus aureus bacteria that can cause MRSA.
It can be found at health food stores and pharmacies and is often included in supplements combined with other vitamins and minerals.
Manuka honey – and basically all other organic and raw honey – is an incredibly potent and natural antibiotic. It is also incredibly tasty and sweet. You can apply it topically on wounds and skin infections to kill flesh-eating bacteria. And of course, you can use it internally, by the spoonful, drizzled on fruit salads, added to your tea, or mixed into your smoothies.
When buying honey, make sure to buy it from a beekeeper at a farmers market or from a health food store. Make sure it is raw and organic. Do not buy honey from a general supermarket, as most brands are not raw and many brands don’t actually contain honey, but high fructose corn syrup instead.
Other natural antibiotics include:
- Reishi mushrooms
- Una de gato
- Pau d’Arco
