Fibromyalgia causes debilitating pain and fatigue. The illness affects at least 5 million American adults aged 18 years or older in the world today. While anyone can exhibit the disease regardless of age or gender, it affects women disproportionately.

According to WomensHealth.gov, 80 to 90 percent of the people suffering from the disease are women. The disease presents with intense aches and pains throughout the body primarily within the tissues and joints, however, certain “tender” points correspond to increased pain when applying pressure to them.

In addition to pain and pressure-sensitive points in the neck, shoulders, arms, back, legs and hips, other symptoms that may manifest are:

  • Impaired cognitive and memory function
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Muscle stiffness, particularly in the morning
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Headaches
  • Menstrual pain
  • Diminished sensation or tingling of hands and feet
  • Sensitivity to temperature
  • Sensitivity to loud noises or bright lights
  • Restless leg syndrome

Causes

What causes fibromyalgia remains unclear. It can often be linked to certain diseases and lifestyle circumstances; for instance, fibromyalgia occurs more often in people with various forms of arthritis or lupus, or in people with a family history of the disease. It also occurs in the absence of other diseases.

The disease also appears more often in people who sustain repetitive motion injuries, experience traumatic events, spend time in war zone environments and suffer from infection or illness.

Treatment

Treating fibromyalgia requires a “multilayer approach,” if you will. As a systemic disease, the kaleidoscope of symptoms it causes need to be treated with synergistic methods that collectively help the suffering individual to function through everyday life. Successful treatment often requires the input of professionals from a variety of medical and alternative therapy disciplines.

Natural Therapies

Natural therapies work well with other treatment methods to relieve fibromyalgia symptoms. According the American Pain Society, the objective of these pain-relieving therapies is to ease chronic pain in particular to further improve daily functions for the patient.

Some of these treatments are:

5 Natural Ways To Ease The Pain

Along with the natural therapies above, there are also several natural remedy options that are available as well that can go hand in hand with the above options that have been proven to help with pain and inflammation.

1. Essential OilsSpiking lavender with peppermint and helichrysum creates an anti-inflammatory synergy.  Use up to 10 drops in a carrier oil such as coconut oil.

2. Vitamin D – Vitamin D deficiency can mimic the signs of fibromyalgia. Studies show that Vitamin D deficiencies can cause bone and muscle pain. Take a supplement to ease pain, but be sure to first consult a ND first as taking too much of this supplement can be toxic.

3. Turmeric – Turmeric is a powerful plant that has an anti- inflammatory effect on the body and may help with easing pain.

4. Get More Veggies – According to one study published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, which involved a dietary intervention in 30 fibromyalgia patients, participants saw benefits from four months of a diet involving mostly raw fruits and vegetables, limited grains, flax oil and carrot juice. “The vegetarian diet still works for people with fibromyalgia,” says one of the original researchers, Michael Donaldson, research director for the Hallelujah Acres Foundation.

5. Reduce Stress – Many people with fibromyalgia mention a feeling of of being anxious, nervous and feeling fatigued. Stress in and of itself can cause a number of problems when experienced too frequently. Some ways to reduce stress include meditation and yoga.

While fibromyalgia can be very debilitating, it is a manageable disease. If you experience at least four of the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia for three months or more, seek medical attention. It may not be fibromyalgia, however, the symptoms indicate something serious either way that may be going on with your body.

As is clear, there are many treatment options, which can be adapted to your needs if you are diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Always consult a healthcare professional such as a ND or your doctor before diving into anything you haven’t yet tried out, but the field of remedies is wide open to you.

What Our Clients Say*

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
