5-Minute Protein-Rich Energy Bar You Have Got To Try

Back in college, before our cross country and track meets, our team always made a quick stop to the grocery store to get some bananas, bagels, sports drinks and granola bars.
The granola and protein bars we got seemed like good ideas for quick energy and recovery before and after races. Trouble was that they were not actually healthy.
We picked the cheapest kinds full of processed sugar and nothing substantial to give real nourishment, just a quick, fake pick-me-up. Obviously, they were not organic and had never seen whole foods either.
In the past several years, I’ve started making my own granola and energy bars. It is honestly a life-changer: they are full of quality ingredients and are just as easy to make as picking their junkie relatives up in the store.
These 5-Minute Protein-Rich Energy Bar are my newest favorites.
Their secret lies in maca and hemp:
- Maca is rich in vitamins B, C and E, zinc, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and amino acids. It is excellent for your mood, energy, adrenal health and skin. As a bonus, it is great for sexual health as well (hello, sexy times).
- Hemp seeds and hemp protein powder (which is basically ground hemp seeds) are some of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for reducing inflammation. Hemp seeds are a good source of protein as well, which is especially important if you are leading an active life. They may reduce your risk of heart disease, aid your digestion, reduce PMS symptoms and make your skin glow.
Besides maca and hemp seeds, these bars have some other powerful ingredients as well:
- Cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It is antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial. It may reduce your risk of heart disease, regulate sugar cravings, lower your blood sugar, may protect against cancer and is great for your brain.
- Honey is one of the most powerful superfoods. It is a potent antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral food. It boosts your memory, is great for allergies, protects against colds and the flu and even helps you sleep.
- Almond butter is a great source of calcium, magnesium, copper and vitamin E. It provides fiber and healthy fats for your diet. While it is most certainly not recommended to eat a bottle of almond butter in one sitting, a tablespoon or two is actually a healthy source of protein and good fats and is an excellent alternative to peanut butter. Make sure to either make your own or choose an organic, raw variety.
- Oats are abundant in copper, biotin, vitamin B1, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, molybdenum, chromium and zinc. They are full of fiber, which helps your digestion and provides sustained energy. They lower your cholesterol, can protect against cardiovascular diseases, stabilize your blood sugar, aid your immune system, can protect against breast cancer and may help with asthma. Even if you are not celiac or sensitive to gluten, it is good to choose a gluten-free variety, especially if you are planning on sharing it. Sharing is caring afterall.

5-Minute Protein-Rich Energy Bar
- ¾ cup gluten-free quick rolled oats
- ¼ cup almond butter (or any other nut butter)
- ¼ cup hemp seeds
- 1 tbsp honey (or maple syrup, or molasses)
- 1 scoop hemp protein powder
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp maca powder
- ¼ cup water or coconut water
- Add your ingredients in your food processor.
- Pulse until blended and achieved a desired consistency.
- The batter should be sticky and easy to press together and form into individual bars.
- Form into 5-6 bars.
- Put them in your fridge for 30-60 minutes to set.
- If planning to keep for longer than 3-4 days, store them in your freezer.
