5 Healing Foods to Radiate Well-Being

Your skin is your largest organ and it plays many significant roles within your body.
- It protects you from the external environment
- It regulates your body temperature
- It helps you feel the sensation of everything around you
- It removes waste and toxins through the form of sweat
The health of your skin can indicate your overall well-being. Acne can be caused by hormonal factors, food sensitivities or gut issues; eczema can be a sign of gluten intolerance or flora imbalance; dry skin can be an indicator of thyroid issues.
As someone who used to suffer from varying skin issues due to a rare kidney disease, I understand how it can bring down your confidence. You feel trapped and try to avoid all social situations so people can’t look at you. Even though you’re a normally active person, you are afraid to go hiking, running or even to the gym because you don’t want people to notice your flawed skin. It can become life-consuming as you persistently look for the “magic potion” that will heal your skin problems.
I get it, I’ve been where you are!
Instead of only seeking topical solutions to treat your skin issues, you’re much better off assessing what issues may be going on internally – the root cause of it all.
When I started healing my body with nourishing foods, it was then that I noticed my skin issues starting to disappear. I no longer obsess about skincare and I constantly get compliments about my glowing skin, which I love.
Here are 5 of my favorite foods to eat for the best, flawless skin:
1. Ginger – Ginger has been shown to reduce chronic inflammation throughout the body. There is a correlation between gut health and skin health. Ginger is great for gut health by assisting in digestion and nutrient absorption to help nourish your skin. It also helps maintain glucose levels, preventing sugar spikes in your bloodstream, which can be another reason for skin issues. Ginger is a powerful antioxidant and promotes anti-aging. Since ginger contains anti-bacterial properties, it can reduce the number of bad bacteria on your skin. You can drink ginger tea for a morning pick-me-up or add ginger root to your morning juice or smoothie. You can also grate some ginger into your soup or veggie dishes for an extra flavor kick.
2. Avocado – Avocados have a high oleic acid (a monounsaturated fatty acid), which keeps the outer layers of your epidermis plump and hydrated. The fatty acid content also helps with skin cell regeneration, replacing inflamed, damaged cells with newer, healthier cells. Since avocados contain both Vitamin E and Vitamin C, eating avocados maintains your skin’s youthfulness. Fresh guacamole with sliced veggies is always an easy snack to make. Add slices of avocado on top of your salad to make it a filling meal. And subbing out your banana for ¼ of an avocado in your morning smoothie makes for a creamy texture.
3. Sauerkraut – Not only is sauerkraut a yummy topper for most savory dishes, the natural probiotics are great to maintain your skin’s health. Probiotics are the good bacteria that help your body to function optimally. When choosing a good brand of sauerkraut, make sure the brine is just natural ingredients of water, sea salt and herbs (optional). You can also find recipes to make your own easy and budget-friendly sauerkraut at home. I love adding sauerkraut onto salads or as a side garnish with lean protein.
4. Sardines – For those who want healthy skin food on a budget, canned sardines make great satiating meals! Sardines are fish that contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are super anti-inflammatory. Along with the omega-3’s, it also contains nutrients like B12, selenium, zinc and iron, helping you maintain glowing skin. Sardines are great on top of salads, with some sauerkraut on the side or mixed with avocado and turned into a healthy dip.
5. Dandelion Greens – Skin issues may be due to toxin overload, so dandelion greens are a great way to detoxify the blood and liver of those toxins. Since dandelion greens are also a natural diuretic, they help your body remove excess fluid and bloating and also excrete the waste out of your body completely. Dandelion greens are extremely nutrient-dense, filled with so many vitamins and minerals that feed your skin and help it stay clear and flawless. You can add dandelion greens to your morning smoothie or juice, or lightly cook them as a side dish. Also, they’re great tossed with some chopped greens in a healthy salad.
Remember, beauty starts from the inside. Trade out your expensive department store skin care products and invest in high-quality, nutrient-dense food. When you feed your body the proper nutrients and focus on your inner health, that beauty will radiate on the outside too.
