5 Habits That Ruin Your Immune System

Written by: Lindsay Sibson

Okay… there is no other proper way to put this.

Being sick SUCKS. BIG TIME!

There is nothing enjoyable about willing snot to get out of your head, or coughing until tears stream down your face, or feeling your head pound so bad that even the sound of a pin dropping would be enough to make you want to cry.

Yeah, NO. None of that. No, thank you!

In order to maintain great health, it is necessary for you to have a strong immune system!

Unfortunately, certain common habits and behaviors can be doing some serious damage to your body’s ability to fight infection and stay healthy.

Here Are The 5 Habits That Ruin Your Immune System

Chronic Stress
  • Feeling stressed-out ALL of the time is extremely bad for your immune system and overall health.
  • When you are stressed, your cortisol levels are constantly elevated.
    • This decreases your prostaglandin levels, which help prevent inflammation and support your immune system.

HOW To Improve: Avoid stressors as much as possible and engage in stress-reducing activities such as: yoga, meditation, laughing, massages, or listening to calming music.

Excessive Use Of Medication
  • Taking OTC or prescription medication too frequently can cause toxic accumulation and also weakens your immune system.
  • Excessive antibiotic use reduces cytokines, which are responsible for alerting the cells of your immune system to start working to protect you.
    • Antibiotic use can also cause you to develop bacteria that are highly resistant, which increases your risk for infections.

HOW To Improve: Use natural remedies for common ailments by conducting your own search and consulting with a naturopathic doctor.

Being Overweight
  • Obesity may reduce your body’s ability to activate your immune system’s capacity to fight off foreign invaders.
  • Excess weight also puts you at risk for stroke, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and osteoarthritis.

HOW To Improve: Eat healthy foods and exercise regularly to maintain a normal weight for your body – both these elements strengthen your immune system.

Drinking Too Much Alcohol
  • More than 1 (women) or 2 (men) servings of alcohol per day increases your susceptibility to diseases.
  • Drinking too much destroys the microbe-killing ability of your white blood cells, which is a vital component of your immune system.
  • Prolonged excessive use of alcohol increases your risk of cancer.

HOW To Improve: Limit your alcohol intake to 1 or 2 servings per day 1-3 days per week. If you start to feel ill, abstain from alcohol completely until you are healthy.

Not Sleeping Enough
  • While you sleep, your immune system has the opportunity to repair itself and get ready for another day. Therefore, not enough sleep weakens this defense mechanism.
  • Sleep deprivation causes your white blood cell count to be lower (especially your immune system’s T-cells), which are meant to protect you from infection.

HOW To Improve: Commit to getting at least 7 hours of solid sleep per night. Shut off electronics at least 1 hour before bed and focus on calming activities such as reading, taking a bath, or meditating.

Well, there you have it! The more you know… the healthier you can be. Avoid these 5 habits that ruin your immune system and you will be able to better maintain a healthy, happy and sickness-free life!

What Our Clients Say*

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
