Foods To Unclog And Strip Plaque From Arteries
A healthy heart is vital for a healthy life and to have a healthy heart, you need healthy arteries.
The arteries of the heart are responsible for carrying the blood to your tissues. However, the buildup of a substance called plaque on the inner walls of the arteries can reduce blood flow or, in some cases, block the flow all together. As the amount of plaque increases, a condition called atherosclerosis develops, which causes the arteries to narrow and harden.
Having clogged arteries greatly increases your chances of suffering a heart attack, stroke, or even death. The best thing you can do to help clean your arteries is to eat healthy foods. In fact, some foods can even help to remove the plaque buildup in the heart.
If you’re worried about clogged arteries at all, you should add these heart-healthy, plaque-destroying foods to your diet immediately.
This pungent and delicious member of the onion family is also a powerful artery cleanser. In a study published in the Annals of Medicine, subjects who took 300mg of garlic powder had their blood cholesterol levels significantly reduced. A German study also found that subjects taking 900mg of garlic per day had an 82% reduction of plaque in their arteries. 82%! That could be lifesaving!
Salmon is a fatty-fish that is not only tasty, but is also a mighty plaque destroyer. Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids help to increase your HDL-cholesterol (your good cholesterol), which then helps to lower your LDL-cholesterol (your bad cholesterol).
In atherosclerosis, white blood cells stream through your body to digest the LDL cholesterol. Over years, the toxic mess of cholesterol and cells becomes a cholesterol plaque in the wall of the artery. Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to reverse atherosclerosis as they alter the white blood cells that enter the heart and cause the plaque, according to a study published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology.
Turmeric is a well-known superfood that can be added to your foods or smoothies in order to unblock your arteries. Turmeric is rich in curcumin, a polyphenolic compound that help to prevent clogged arteries by suppressing certain gene expressions that play a key role in atherosclerosis development.
A study published in the Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology also found that curcumin reduced the risk of plaque buildup as it was found to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions.
4. Olive Oil
Diets rich in plant-derived polyphenols such as olive oil have been shown to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseases by improving the endothelium, the area that lines the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, forming a boundary between circulating blood in the artery and the rest of the blood vessel wall.
Research published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that, if consumed modestly, olive oil helps to improve the function of the endothelium in patients with clogged arteries.
Pomegranates contain tannins (a group of polyphenols also found in wine) and anthocyanin, a flavonoid that has demonstrated the ability to protect against a myriad of human diseases. Research has shown that pomegranate juice effectively reduced clogged arteries by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the blood vessels.
Another study also found that pomegranate juice helped reduce atherosclerosis by reducing the development of lesions, reducing blood pressure and causing changes in oxidative stress.
So, what are you waiting for? These foods are simple to incorporate into almost every meal! Try some turmeric in your smoothie, some pomegranate as a snack, olive oil on your lunch salad, garlic in your hummus and some salmon for dinner!
