5 Easy Ways to Maintain a Healthy Gut

Gut health is a hot topic these days – and for good reason! Did you know…

At least 70% of your immune system is in your gut!

And 85% of your serotonin receptors are located in your gut!

This means that an unhealthy gut can lead to:

  • Low immune function
  • Mood Swings
  • Increase in autoimmune symptoms
  • Depression
  • Brain Fog
  • Increased susceptibility to disease
  • Leaky Gut Syndrome


An unhealthy gut has also been linked to autism and other serious mental illnesses.

What are symptoms of an unhealthy gut?

  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Infrequent bowel movements
  • Stomach cramps or aches
  • Burning or acid reflux
  • Brain Fog
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Acne
  • Skin rashes, eczema, psoriasis


So how do you maintain a healthy gut?

#1. Eliminate Food Allergies and Sensitivities

Eliminate any food allergies and sensitivities you may have that can cause inflammation and/or irritation in the gut – you can determine food allergies by doing an elimination diet or a comprehensive blood test thru your naturopath or functional medicine doctor.


#2. Eat Fermented Foods

Try to include fermented foods in your diet on a weekly basis. Fermented foods include sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt, kombucha, kefir and pickled vegetables. Fermented foods are full of natural occurring probiotics and nutrients that help balance your healthy gut flora and boost the immune system.

#3. Take a Daily Probiotic

For those of you who do not like fermented foods, or if you do not eat them often, you should consider taking a daily probiotic supplement. Probiotics can come in both powder and capsule form. Aim for 10 probiotic strains, minimum and at least 10 billion CFU’s (colony forming units) per capsule. Refrigerated are best.


#4. Drink Bone Broth

#5. Get Your Stool Tested

I work very closely with a Naturopathic Doctor who is adamant about having all her clients perform a stool test. She uncovers hidden infections on almost everyone! Yeast infections, bacterial infections, parasites, food allergies and other critters can be silently harming your gut and can then affect your immune system, moods, brain function, etc. without you even realizing it. It’s a simple, painless test and it could very well change your life!

There is SO much information out there about gut health today – Even the Western Medicine Doctors are beginning to acknowledge the gut-brain-immune connection.
