Cancer is such a widespread disease and the treatments – though they can help – are not the easiest or safest to go through.

A fact that is so often overlooked under the stress of preventing/fighting cancer is that our beautiful planet has already created some pretty incredible safe, natural ingredients that can not only help to fight – and in some cases even kill – cancer, but are also easy to access and taste great.

Whether you are at risk for cancer or not, here are 5 different cancer-fighting spices that you should try out to give your body a highly beneficial, defensive boost!

1. Garlic

There have been several population studies that have shown an association between the increased intake of garlic and the reduced risk of certain cancers, including colon, stomach, breast, pancreas and esophagus cancer.

The population studies are multidisciplinary studies of large groups that focus on investigating the cause or spread of a disease or examining the different effects of the health-related interventions, dietary intakes, or environmental exposures.

The analysis of the data from the seven different population studies were able to show that the higher the amount of cooked and raw garlic was consumed, the lower the risk of colorectal and stomach cancer.

2. Ginger

In one research study that was conducted on tumor-bearing mice, the scientists were able to discover that ginger can actually kill certain cancerous cells in two ways.

In the first way, known as apoptosis, the ginger is able to cause the cancer cells to “commit suicide” by destroying themselves while being able to leave the surrounding healthy cells completely untouched. Ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties prevent precancerous tumors from creating breeding grounds and even proper climates for growth.

The second way is called autophagy, in which ginger actually tricks the cancerous cells into eating each other.

3. Turmeric

There have been a number of different laboratory studies conducted on cancer cells that have shown that curcumin – a key element in turmeric – actually does have anticancer effects.

Turmeric seems to be able to kill off cancer cells and help to prevent more from growing within your body. It has the greatest effects on bowel cancer, breast cancer, skin cancer and stomach cancer.

4. Cinnamon

Water-soluble cinnamon extract has shown to be able to inhibit the growth and spread of different cancers in laboratory cell cultures of various types of cancer that include melanoma, lymphoma, colorectal and cervical cancer.

In the different mice models with melanoma, the cinnamon extract was orally administered and was able to significantly inhibit tumor growth.

Cinnamon is not only super tasty, but can also be added to most of your sweet dishes or even beverages like this yummy orange blueberry vanilla cinnamon smoothie.

5. Cayenne Pepper

In multiple clinical studies that were conducted in the United States, Japan and England, capsaicin – the critical secondary metabolite compound that was found in cayenne pepper (including other hot peppers) – has been shown to cause different cancer cells to undergo “apoptosis,” a form of cellular self-termination or suicide.
