This strange looking, hard-to-get-into fruit may just pack more power than you realized!

Pineapples are more than an island inspired sweet treat. These prickly exterior, delectable interior fruits are loaded with nutrients – and they’re also pretty crafty when it comes to some common complaints we hear about daily at Fitlife!

1

1. Plantar Warts

Over the years, I’ve had issues with plantar warts on the bottoms of my feet on occasion. The idea of freezing them off makes me cringe a bit so instead, I like to use pineapple! Sounds strange, but the malic acid in the pineapple helps to kill the virus.

Since warts are caused by a virus, it’s important to support your immune system and boost your body’s ability to fight those nasty viruses that we’re exposed to daily. As with any virus, you may notice that these pesky warts show up when your body is run down, worn out or you’re coming down with a cold.

2

Make sure to get enough sleep and move your body to stimulate your lymphatic system, which is so important to aid in proper detoxification. You’ve likely heard me say this before, but your lymphatic system, unlike your heart, doesn’t have a pump. That means that in order for it to do it’s job and push those toxins out, it needs YOUR help! Moving your body gets the lymph flowing, which is then secreted through your bowels. Sweat and urine are also important detoxification pathways.

Some great immune boosting superfoods include: vitamin C (or camu camu, which is more potent than vitamin C alone), zinc, olive leaf, elderberry, ginger, oregano oil, or my personal favorite – TURMERIC! Thankfully we have our very own turmeric supplement on the market now. You can check that out here – Daily Turmeric Boost.

How to use it: Juice 2 cups of pineapple and pour into a pan large enough to fit your foot in. Soak your foot for 10 or so minutes. Repeat as necessary. You can also rub pineapple directly onto the wart. The pineapple juice will dry the wart out.

2. Arthritis

Bromelain contains powerful proteolytic (protein-digesting) enzymes, which aid in digestive support. And we know that 70-80% of our immune system resides in our gut so having this kind of support is highly beneficial to not only your gut, but your entire immune system too.

3

It’s been found that this enzyme has the power to decrease pain and swelling in those with arthritis, with some evidence even pointing to it’s pain relieving and anti-inflammatory effects comparable to NSAIDs.

A 2005 study done in Germany showed that bromelain activated immune cells that fight infection.

Back in 1982, Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw wrote about the benefits of a plant enzyme called bromelain. This super-enzyme is derived from pineapple stems.

Unfortunately, more often than not, pain reliever drugs are prescribed or bought over-the-counter in the case of chronic inflammation to help soothe the fire within. The difficult part is that these drugs treat the symptoms, not the root cause. And with long-term use, you risk side effects, which can be worse than the actual condition itself! Not to mention the potential effects on major organs, such as the liver and kidneys.

Athletes are turning to bromelain more than ever to help manage sports injuries and cut recovery times from surgery.1,2 Bromelain has also shown promise in managing varied conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and sinusitis.3,4

And as if that’s not enough to have you running to the market for a deliciously juicy pineapple, scientists have discovered that bromelain exhibits tumor-fighting properties, which are being explored for potential anti-cancer drugs.5

3. Libido

Looks like the secret to increases your bedroom excitement may be found in… pineapple? Yep! Historically, pineapple was used to cure impotence and it may be because of a very important mineral – manganese.

You may have heard the common statement to “take your vitamins.” But did you know that without minerals, vitamins are basically useless? A deficiency in minerals may have bigger implications that once thought.

4

Dietary minerals play a vital role in biological functions, including hormones – directly linked to, you guessed it, libido!

Your endocrine system houses your thyroid and adrenals, which create and secrete hormones throughout your body. For this complex and important system to run smoothly, minerals are essential.

Due to modern farming methods (eh hem, GMO crops, etc.), these minerals in our food supply have sadly been depleted from our soils.

Our body requires dozens of minerals to function at peak performance. There are, however, certain minerals that have been shown to have some direct or indirect effect on sexual function, potency, ability and enjoyment. These critical minerals include: zinc, iodine, copper, iron, selenium and magnesium and manganese.

Since we’re on the topic of pineapples and manganese, let me go into that a little…

Manganese helps to produce sex hormones and potentially boost sexual desire. This trace mineral is a great support for reproductive health in general. A deficiency may lead to low sperm count, low sex drive and possibly even infertility.

4. Bloating

As with arthritis, bromelain steals the show for the reduction of the annoying condition. Because of the powerful enzymes in pineapple, proteins are more easily broken down, which can help to relieve abdominal bloating.

Here’s an absolutely amazing recipe to try to banish the bloat!
