4 Trustworthy Health Benefits Of Chamomile

By Justin Cowart

German chamomile has long been admired by the German people. They even have an expression for the plant: Alles zu vertraut – “completely trustworthy.” But this plant isn’t just exclusive to Germany – it is also popular within Europe as a medicinal herb and is also used in the Americas.

Chamomile is now one of the most popular herbs in the Western world. There are two types of chamomile: the more popular German chamomile and the English (or Roman) chamomile. Even though they are different species, however, these plants are often used to help the same health issues.

This herb has been used for thousands of years due to its medicinal potency, dating back to the Romans, Greeks and even Egyptian times. There was a study that showed the sedative properties of chamomile tea. The tea has proven to have anti-inflammatory properties, being able to alleviate arthritis pain and a variety of conditions characterized by swelling, heat, pain and redness. The tea has even been scientifically proven as a sound antispasmodic, which can relieve cramps.

4 Health Benefits Of Chamomile

  • Digestive problems: The chamomile plant was traditionally used in the treatment of indigestion, gas, diarrhea, stomach cramps, colic and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

  • Eczema, skin irritations: Chamomile has been used in ointments or cream for a soothing effect on irritated skin (this is most common in Europe).

  • Mouth sores, gingivitis: This plant has been used for mouth problems as well.  There is evidence to support that chamomile can prevent mouth sores in patients of chemotherapy.

  • Insomnia, anxiety: Chamomile is used in the U.S. as a sleep aid and to reduce anxiety. A controlled, randomized clinical trial found that chamomile capsules were able to reduce symptoms of anxiety in patients with mild to moderate generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Chamomile Tea
  • 1 teaspoon of dried chamomile flowers or loose-leaf chamomile tea or chamomile teabag
  • 8 oz. of alkaline water, heated just to a boil
  • Honey, mint and/or lemon for additional taste
  1. Add your tea (if loose-leaf or dried chamomile flowers, add to steeper) to mug and add your water. Be sure to let your boiled water cool slightly before adding to your tea as chamomile tea is best when steeped in hot water, not boiling.
  2. Let steep for 5-10 minutes. When it comes to herbal teas, a longer steeping will improve the flavor and grant their fullest benefits.
  3. Remove your tea from the water. Add your desired flavor, if you wish and serve fresh.

There you have it, an easy recipe for you to reap the benefits of chamomile tea. Now just sit back and relax with the comfort of your chamomile tea.

I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
