4 Steps To Finding True Sweetness In Your Life

I know what it’s like to have constant sugar cravings, to be tired all the time and to feel sad. You are unable to go a day without sugar, you feel out of control and there’s a sense of hopelessness that it is never going to change.
You keep trying to eat healthier, make a few changes here and there, but nothing ever sticks.
Deep down you feel like you are addicted to sugar. You want to make a lasting change but you don’t know where to start.
You might be scared, lonely and frustrated. Or worried about what might happen to your health if you don’t get control of it soon.
I frequently hear these types of comments from my clients. Know that you are not alone in feeling this way. I personally felt this way for a long time.
I struggled with digestive issues, insidious sugar cravings and constant thoughts about my next sweet fix, especially chocolate.
Today, my energy is back! My brain fog has lifted. My taste buds have changed. I’m thoroughly satisfied with the food I eat and I am able to have a healthy, sweet treat every now and then.
There is a way to ditch the sugar and the hold that it has on you. I did it and so can you!
One of the most important things I did that helped me let go of sugar and sweets was to look and see where the sweetness was missing. At the time, I wasn’t fully satisfied in a couple areas of my life, especially with career, so I turned to sugar to fill me up.
Here’s a journaling exercise with four steps to start evaluating the sweetness level of your life and determine why you might be turning to sugar in the first place.
- Identify the areas of nourishment in your life. Draw a circle and divide it into pie shaped slices. Label each slice with the main areas of your life such as work, exercise, nutrition, creativity, home, health, cooking, relationships, finances, joy, social life and spirituality.
- Evaluate their sweetness levels. Mark a dot in each slice to determine how satisfied or sweet things are feeling in that area of your life. Closer to the middle = not very satisfied/sweet. Closer to the outer edge = feeling pretty sweet.
- Determine what’s missing. Decide which area you want to focus on. Which ones are lacking inspiration, passion, meaning and purpose? Which ones are calling out for a bit more sweetness right now?
- Take action. If you’re miserable in your job and seeking a true calling, what steps will you take to move in this direction? If you’re relationships are draining, maybe some tough conversations need to be had. If your financial picture is looking pretty bleak, make a plan to get it back on track this year. Write out your sweetness action plan and go for it!
Life is busy and focusing on all areas at once may be a large feat… after all, you aren’t superhuman. So pick one or two and see if you can get a little more satisfaction and sweetness happening in those areas. Once you hit the sweet spot with those, move onto the next one.
Struggles with food, sugar and chocolate are never about the food itself. Bringing sweetness back into a lacking area of your life just might remove your need for sweet treats.
Breaking your sugar habit is hard. It’s a process. But finding where the sweetness is missing is a great place to start.
