3 Spices To Remedy Your Skin

My war with eczema is no secret and while today my skin rarely shows traces of this war, every now and then the eczema may win a battle or two. In those time I am forced to deploy my most trusted tools in my arsenal.

Keeping myself at an optimum health level is a full time job that requires not only patience, but also taking careful note of what works and most importantly, what doesn’t work. This is especially true for my skin.

I am a big believer that there is a food, spice and herb for virtually any ailment and that it is really about finding the right combinations for your unique biological makeup.

For example, I find that my sibling seems to barely have any sensitivities and allergies while I, on the other hand, can easily experience these just because the weather changes or I used a lotion that my skin didn’t like. For this reason, I have to pay careful attention to everything to ensure that I don’t get any weird flare ups.

While this is my normal reality, I find that using the spices in my kitchen helps keep my skin free and happy. I use these three spice generously in my foods and beverages to help keep the eczema at bay and my skin silky smooth.

1. Nutmeg

I did not use nutmeg much in my life, but through my research, I became better acquainted with it. Nutmeg is known for its astringent, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It restores and rejuvenates skin by getting rid of the dead cells. It also helps reduce the appearance of pores, wrinkles and marks.

2. Turmeric

I wrote a whole article on how turmeric can help you achieve an amazing glow. The trick is to use it mixed with honey, to prevent the yellow tinge on your face after using it. It is important to start with very small quantities and increase the amount as you get comfortable with it.

Why is turmeric awesome for you skin? Because it has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It helps fight off free radicals and that in turn reduces the signs of aging. For people suffering from acne, turmeric helps soothe the inflammation while also helping with scars and reducing the amount of oil secreted by the sebaceous glands.

3. Cinnamon

You know that I love tea and one of the ways I like to take my tea is with cinnamon. Just a small amount of cinnamon can make my tea sing. The same goes for your skin. Why? Cinnamon is another anti-inflammatory agent and contains antiseptic properties. When applied on the face, cinnamon brings blood and oxygen to the surface of the skin, which will give you a rosy youthful look.

It works on acne by reducing the inflammation and redness. But remember, cinnamon is strong and should never be applied directly, or even mixed with water, to your face. Always use a gentle medium like raw honey to help balance out its strong spicy nature.

Now to the fun part, a face mask that incorporates all three spices.

The base is honey, which restores moisture to the skin. I advise that you begin with a small batch to test and see how your skin reacts. The best results occur when you let the mask sit on your face for more than 30 minutes.

***General disclaimer: this mask is NOT to be used in place of whatever already works, but rather to be used alongside. Also if you have any prescribed skin medication, please consult your doctor.

Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons organic honey
  • ¼ to 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder, depending on your tolerance (it is always best to start with a very small quantity)
  • ¼ teaspoon finely ground nutmeg powder
  • A pinch of organic turmeric powder (increase it as required)

Optional:

  • A drop of avocado or jojoba oil (in the winter months or if your skin is too dry)
  • A pinch of ground orange peel (if you have it and need a little glow)

Instructions:

1. Mix all ingredients in a small glass jar.

2. Apply a thin layer on your face and let it sit for 30 to 60 minutes. The quantity of face mask using the above proportions is enough to last for four applications.

3. Pop the rest into the refrigerator for a cool treat. Use for at least a week to see good results.
