3 Reasons Why You Will Never Have Enough Time To Be Healthy
Written By: Penny Rosina
It is a fact that more than two-thirds (68.8%) of the adult population today is overweight or obese.
And although people appear to be more health conscious today than in years past, this number is still staggering. And here are some major reasons why people just don’t take the time to get healthy….
Top 3 reasons why you will never find the time to be healthy:
1. Fear of Change: Change can be scary. It means leaving your comfort zone, letting go of old routines, beliefs and processes and venturing out into the unknown. The idea of undertaking a new challenge can bring up uncomfortable feelings. When it comes to things like weight loss, you can often experience a fear of failure; perhaps because you have tried pills, powders and potions from television commercials, lost the weight and immediately regained it and sometimes additional weight as well. You may decide that the fear of messing up, of being judged and humiliated (“What if I don’t measure up? What if I make a mistake?”) does not merit taking the risk.
Change isn’t simply about embracing something unknown – it’s about giving up something old (and therefore viewed as good because of longevity) for something new (and therefore viewed as seemingly not good).
Conversely, there is fear of success. Getting fit through diet and exercise creates big changes in your life – changes you welcome. But if your friends and family aren’t in the same mode of change, they can be oblivious, jealous and uncomfortable with your changes. Not everyone wants to see you succeed. Perhaps they feel guilty because you are getting in shape and they are not. Or perhaps they miss the “old you”, the one who brought the donuts to work or the one who they could count on to drown their sorrows with in a gallon of ice cream when they were having a bad day. And in their fear of losing you, they may try to sabotage your efforts, tempting you to detour off the path of healthy living you are trying to follow.
2. Lack of Planning: No doubt about it, the rewarding path to healthy living takes effort and planning. You schedule everything else in your life, so start making a plan to include your new routines as well. You will not be eating fast food or convenience meals you pop into the microwave. You will need to plan your meals for the week, shop accordingly and then allow time for preparation and cooking. You will need to schedule time at the gym, time for a yoga class or time for tennis or golf, or whatever fitness activity appeals to you. You can easily go for a brisk walk during your lunch hour. You have time and room for these things but you have to start with a plan. You’ll never achieve a healthy lifestyle without one. Plan for success!
3. You Don’t Believe You Deserve It: This may be the most difficult one to overcome. It’s possible you will sabotage your own success, because at some deeper level, you still don’t believe you really deserve the body and happiness you desire. In a strange way, carrying the extra weight may be much more inside your comfort zone than being thin. As unhappy as you may be, you already know what to expect in life – things are routine and predictable.
If this sounds familiar, then what you should understand is these are beliefs you either learned from others or created for yourself – nothing more. You don’t have to carry them any further with you. Changing these beliefs requires some deep reflection and earnest effort, but any negative belief you may have about yourself, your body or your worthiness as a person can be changed.
Recognizing these old limiting beliefs and being willing to exchange them for new beliefs can help you get where you want to be rather than blocking your way. When you take time for yourself to pursue your passions, relax, do the things that you enjoy or even do nothing at all, you will end up happier, healthier and feeling better. “You” time allows you to de-stress, unwind and rejuvenate. Taking time for yourself allows you to renew, heal and create reserves of energy and peace.
Learn to love and care for yourself first. If everyone else around you is worthy of care and attention, then so are you. You not only have the right to this time, but you need it for your own well-being. You will be amazed at how a little bit of time to yourself can make a huge difference in the health and happiness you deserve.
