3 Reasons WHY Having A Morning Ritual ROCKS
For most of 2015, my life was the epitome of ANTI-routine. I was traveling internationally, living out of a backpack, switching my “home” every few weeks or so and flying by the seat of my pants.
One day I would be struggling to figure out which bus to take where and the next I would be lounging on a beach sipping local wine. I woke up every morning with nothing but the blank day ahead of me! Sounds like a dream, right?
(And it totally is – for the most part)
You know what?
The thought of NOT having anything I absolutely HAD to do freaked me out. It turned up my anxiety!
I am a planner. Plain and simple. Sure, I can go with the flow and “run with it,” but I also like to be productive and I feel that having a plan paves the way to productivity.
And what better way to START your day than to have a morning routine or ritual that gives you a jumpstart to your day and sets you up for success?
Here Are 3 Reasons Why Having a Morning Ritual Rocks!
1. Sleep Like A Baby
You are BOMBARDED by information all day every day. From e-mails to advertisements, I’m willing to bet that not even an hour goes by where you aren’t having to process new information and stimulation. And then… what happens at night? It swims around in that smart head of yours and keeps you awake!
GET IT OUT OF YOUR HEAD!
Instead of letting your “To-Do” list buzz around between your ears, simply take a post-it note and write down what is on your mind before getting some shut eye.
Write down what you will do when you first wake up and then give yourself a mini-map of how your day will flow.
Now that you have a clear mind, you can sleep soundly knowing that when you wake up, you have a plan in place and will be good to go!
2. It Takes The Guesswork Out
I’m all about the power of having choices, but when the choices are endless… it can leave you feeling overwhelmed and thinking “WHAT should I do NOW?”
Once you have a morning ritual and routine, you won’t be standing there with analysis paralysis trying to make decisions.
Your morning ritual is completely customizable and can include pre-made decisions such as what you do when you first wake up, what you will eat for breakfast, what you will wear, etc. It can be as simple or as detailed as you would like!
3. Healthy Habits Lead To More Healthy Habits
When your morning ritual includes actions and steps you are taking to enhance your health, you are flipping a switch and setting yourself up to have a healthy day!
For example, if your morning ritual includes: wake up and express gratitude, drink lemon water, take probiotics, drink a morning healing tonic, do some light stretching and read inspirational and educational material… You are MORE inclined to make healthier choices throughout your day than if you jump out of bed, grab a sugar-infested granola bar and rush out the door.
I’ve been at this morning routine deal for the past month and I must say, it brings a sense of productive serenity to my early morning hours. I’m loving it! I simply write down on a post-it note what my morning will look like and stick it next to my bed before I go to sleep.
It doesn’t have to be overly complicated. Here is a quick look at what my post-it note morning ritual looked like this morning (with some added clarification):
- Water & Vitamin D
- Morning Tonic (Water, 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon chia seeds, 1 teaspoon kelp granules, juice of ¼ lemon (or 3 drops lemon essential oil), pinch of pink himalayan sea salt) ← tastes absolutely awful, but I chug it down and it certainly wakes me RIGHT UP!
- Probiotics – I take Biotic Balance.
- Coffee – I make “Bulletproof Coffee” using grass-fed butter and coconut oil (and sweeten with a few drops of stevia).
- Read – Right now I am reading Tony Robbins Money Master The Game.
- Education & Learning – I am currently enrolled in a program to learn more about launching an online business.
BOOM there you have it! That is my first hour-ish of the day and it focuses on my top TWO goals, which are health and education.
Note: Of course somewhere in that hour, I spend a few minutes scrolling through my Facebook and Instagram… I am human, afterall!
Instead of just THINKING about what you want to do each morning, you will have a system in place that provides you with guidance and helps make you feel like you’re “getting it done” before you even leave your house!
What is part of your morning ritual?
