3 Of Nature’s Top Most Effective Pain Relievers

Unfortunately, pain is something that we have to deal with from time to time; others more often than some. And when it comes to relieving pain, we have become accustomed to simply popping a pill to get relief, which is the first thought for many people. However, taking over-the-counter or prescription painkillers not only comes with side effects, but can often be habit forming.

Whether you are suffering from a headache, a backache, or even a toothache, there are natural remedies that you can use in place of pain pills, such as these herbs and spices.

Turmeric

Turmeric contains an antioxidant called curcumin that helps protect your cells against damage caused by free radicals in the environment. Turmeric has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help to ease the pain of minor aches and pains and even more severe pain such as rheumatoid arthritis. One study showed that taking turmeric “eased pain and improved function” of people with knee osteoarthritis just as well as ibuprofen.

Turmeric can be found as a powder to be added to your recipes such as to soups or can be used in capsule or root form. To help relieve pain, take ¼ teaspoon a day.

Ginger

Ginger possesses several properties that are beneficial when it comes to pain. An active compound of ginger is gingerol. Gingerol provides antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties, which provide natural pain relief.

Grate ginger root and wrap it into a cheesecloth and place in hot water for 30 seconds to make a ginger compress. Simply place cooled compress to the area that is in pain for 20 minutes.

Cloves

Cloves are great pain relief, especially when it comes to a nasty toothache. They are full of anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that not only can give you relief from the pain, but also help in relieving the swelling of a toothache. The analgesic properties of cloves help to fight off any infections within the gum and the tooth.

Clove comes in a few different forms such as the actual herb and clove oil. To use clove oil for toothache relief:

  • Dab a little clove oil on a cotton ball and rub it on the sore tooth and the gums surrounding the tooth.
  • After brushing your teeth as normal, add 1 to 2 drops of clove oil to ¼ cup of warm water. Dab a clean toothbrush into the water and brush the affected area with the mixture. You can also rinse your mouth with the remaining water.  
  • Using cloves, grind up 2 cloves and mix in a little olive oil. Apply the mixture to the affected area.
