3 Nutrition Tips to Maximize the Benefits of Exercise
Written By Marisa Molina
Exercise has amazing benefits for the body, but in order to maximize the benefits of your fantastic workout you have to pair it with good nutrition!
1) Pre-workout – Eating before your workout can be tricky. You don’t want to eat too much so that you get cramps or feel sluggish, but you need to get enough in your system to feel energetic enough to get through your workout. Nothing is worse than getting to the gym and feeling too tired to complete your workout. Your best options are complex carbohydrates: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Avoid protein and dairy products which can be hard to digest and can make you feel sick during your workout.
2) Within 15 minutes post-workout – your best option is a glass of JUICE! Yep, that’s right! You need liquids and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates help you to replenish the glycogen stores in your muscles that you just used up exercising. This will also help to prevent major muscle soreness. So why juice and not an actual piece of fruit? Juicing helps to remove some of the parts of the fruit that are hard to digest, the goal within the first 15 minutes is to get immediate energy, and juicing aids in this process by allowing your body to absorb the carbohydrates quickly.
3) Within an hour post-workout – you should have a balanced meal with protein and complex carbohydrates. Protein is essential because it will help to rebuild and repair your muscles. It has also been found to improve insulin sensitivity (how well your body detects sugar), which is extremely important to your metabolism.
Lastly, WATER is essential for proper function of your body’s organs so stay hydrated! Drink water before, during, and after your workout!
