25 Essential Oils You Need To Know About

But first, essential oils are everywhere we look now. Personally I’ve been using them over the past two years and I feel like they can alter your state whenever you need a pick me up, relax or simply more mental concentration. I’ve looked into every essential oil company there is and Doterra is the best.

#1 Lemon

Lemon is great for cleaning the home and for taking care of your body! You can mix it with water in a spray bottle to freshen up a room or put a few drops on a rag with warm water to wipe down the counters and get grease off the stove. You can even throw a drop or two into the washing machine to get out unwanted odors. Lemon is an uplifting oil and is great for detox and cleansing. You can put a few drops in a glass of water for an energy/cleansing boost and to help with focus. You can also use lemon in a facial scrub to help remove dead skin.

#2 Lavender

Lavender can be a mom’s best friend! When your kids won’t go to sleep… try putting a drop of lavender on their pillow. You can also put it in a spray bottle and spray a little in the room. It should make bedtime a little more calm, as well as freshen up any musty air smell. Lavender can also be diluted with coconut oil and rubbed on the bottom’s of older children’s feet. Lavender is great for the skin and has disinfecting properties. You can apply it to sunburns, scars, or skin irritations. Be careful not to apply it to any open wounds. Apply lavender to the back of your neck, chest and between the eyes to help with allergy relief.

#3 Peppermint

Peppermint is commonly used for digestive upset or gastrointestinal issues. You can rub it on your belly/abdomen and on the bottom of your feet and use it in tea. Peppermint oil is more concentrated than peppermint leaves so one drop in some tea can do wonders. Peppermint is great for mental alertness and focus, especially when you are feeling sleep. Rub together a drop or two in your hands and cup around your nose and mouth and inhale. You can also rub it behind your ears. Peppermint is also good for sore muscles and joints and can be applied topically to areas that ache. Oh…and spiders HATE peppermint. Spray or diffuse some around your room to keep away the eight-legged friends!

#4 Frankincense

Frankincense has been used since biblical times for damaged skin and to help get rid of blemishes, stretch marks, wrinkles, acne and wounds. When Jesus was born, it was worth more than gold and was even found in King Tutankhamen’s tomb. Frankincense has antibacterial properties and is good for strengthening the immune system and calming inflammation. The scent may also help with stress, anxiety, panic attacks, depression and insomnia. For quick relief put a drop on your thumb and hold to the top of the inside of your mouth for a few seconds.

#5 Orange Peel

One of my personal favorites, wild orange smells rich and fruity and is great for mood enhancement. It is said to calm the body, lift the spirit and bring happiness to the mind. You can apply it topically to the bottoms of your feet, cup in your hands and inhale, or rub behind your ears. It contains the antioxidant d-limonene and has the ORAC value of approximately 18,898. It also acts as an aphrodisiac and may help with libido. Orange oil has anti-inflammatory properties and can be placed topically on swollen areas or taken in small amounts internally. Orange oil boosts immunity as it is a great cleanser.

#6 Tea Tree

Some people call this oil a “medicine cabinet in a bottle” as it can be used to help almost any common ailment. You can apply tea tree oil topically to aid in eliminating warts, eczema, cold sores, insect bites, acne, fungus, dandruff etc. It is also useful in keeping away fleas; simply spray some water/tea tree oil mist around your pet’s bed. Tea Tree oil has antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral properties. How’s that for immune support? You can add some tea tree oil to aloe vera and apply to damaged and/or sunburned skin, or on a cotton ball to dab directly on infections.

#7 Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is an energizing oil that people have found most useful for helping the respiratory system. It is a natural decongestant and can help relieve tight airways that often come with asthma attacks or cold and flu season. You can make a salve with eucalyptus oil to apply to the chest, cup in hands and inhale, or diffuse in a room. It is one of the best oils for treating a runny nose. Because eucalyptus is a natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, some people have found it to be helpful with symptoms of fibromyalgia, arthritis and shingles when applied topically to painful areas. Eucalyptus has a powerful scent and is often an effective bug repellant.

Note: It is still in question whether or not Eucalyptus oil is safe for children under 2.

#8 Roman Chamomile

Roman Chamomile is a natural sedative and thus good for helping with anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia and relieving stress. This oil also generally appeals to children and may help with nighttime wind-down, ear and tooth aches, fighting fevers and relieving stomach colic. When using on kids, always dilute or diffuse only. Roman chamomile is a very grounding oil and can be added to a bath or put on a pillow to help relaxation. Women find it helpful with menstrual symptoms. If you are prone to allergies, try diffusing it around your home and rubbing it on the bottoms of your feet during allergy season. Roman chamomile is also beneficial to dry skin, acne or rashes when applied with a carrier oil topically.

#9 Fennel

Ahhhh fennel… this oil tastes just like black licorice and is a lifesaver when it comes to digestive upset. Whenever my stomach is feeling distraught, I rub this oil directly onto my abdomen, or take a drop or two in a small cup of water. It is also helpful with menstrual symptoms and was used historically to balance a woman’s reproductive system.

#10 Ginger

Ginger is of course another excellent oil for helping digestive issues such as gas, constipation, nausea, heartburn, food poisoning and stomach pain. It can also help with motion sickness. It is a warming oil and may provide emotional and physical comfort. Ginger oil is a natural anti-inflammatory and may help balance the immune system. In India, they add ginger to tea to help with respiratory issues such as lung and nasal congestion. In China, they believe ginger oil strengthens and boosts your heart and preliminary research has shown that it may indeed help reduce cholesterol levels and blood clots.

#11 Patchouli

Patchouli is thought to soothe the nervous system and be helpful in relieving symptoms of anxiety and depression. It is sometimes associated with “hippies” because of its use for mood enhancement. Patchouli is a powerful skin-care agent. When applied topically, it is thought to help skin cell growth and can be mixed with lotion to help with infections and wounds and even to decrease cellulite. It is also used in aiding those with addiction recovery and fatigue.

#12 Rose

Roses were one of the first plants to be used for their essential oil. It takes a LOT of of roses to get a small amount of oil so it is one of the more expensive oils. However, it is sought out by many for its powerful properties and is often considered the “queen” of essential oils. Rose oil is amazing for helping with emotional and mental strains, particularly anxiety and depression. It is thought to be a heart protecting oil that helps with circulation and cell regeneration. Not surprisingly, rose oil also acts as an aphrodisiac. Rose oil has been used to help reduce fever, treat wounds, help the skin recover from scarring and a lot of feminine issues like hormone regulation, purifying the uterus, calming mood swings, easing excessive bleeding, etc.

#13 Ylang Ylang

Pronounced “ee-lang ee-lang” this is a fun oil not only because of its name, but because of its unique aroma. It is a great stress reducer and aphrodisiac; just add a few drops into a bath, diffuse in a room, or mix with a massage oil to help spark a little romance. Ylang ylang is also supposed to be a good mood uplifter and may help those with depression. Other common uses include headache relief, hair growth stimulation, digestive upset, nausea and blood thinning.

#14 Bergamot

Bergamot oil is a citrus oil native to Southern Asia. It is often used in perfumes and colognes.  Bergamot is a very uplifting oil and has been used to help people overcome problems like anorexia, anxiety and depression. It is useful for a number of skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis and dry or oily skin. Before using over large portions of your skin, always try a drop on a small area to see if you are sensitive. If sensitivity occurs, try diluting it with coconut or another carrier oil. For a great skin lotion, try mixing it with some lavender and vitamin E lotion. Bergamot also has anti-inflammatory properties and may help to improve the nervous system and stimulate good circulation and digestion.

#15 Cedarwood

Hey men, here is a deep and rich scented oil that should appeal particularly to you! It dates back to the time of the ancient Egyptians and may have been one of the first essential oils used therapeutically. Cedarwood is believed to be spiritually uplifting and calming. It is great for the respiratory system and acts as an aphrodisiac, antispasmodic, astringent, diuretic, expectorant and a sedative. Use this oil to calm the mind and body. As cedarwood is a highly concentrated, oil it is best to dilute before applying to the skin.

#16 Marjoram

Marjoram was a popular oil used by the Greeks for digestive upset. It is great for helping with hyperactivity, anxiety and insomnia; if your child is struggling, try adding it to their bath or a diffuser in their room. Some people also find it helpful with headaches and tension. Marjoram has a general warming effect on the body and helps with circulation and removal of toxins. It has antiviral properties and may help when overcoming infections, like influenza and colds.

#17 Jasmine

Jasmine is a very famous flower that blooms only at night and is often associated with girls in romance stories. Like rose oil, jasmine oil has a strong effect on one’s mental and emotional state and may help with depression or seasonal blues. It is one of the best disinfectant and antiseptic oils as it contains germicidal, fungicidal, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Because of this it can be used topically to help with skin wounds and infections as well as inhaled to help with respiratory infections and discomfort. Jasmine oil has also long been used for its skin care benefits and can help rehydrate severely dry skin. This is a great oil for new and expecting mothers, as it has been shown to help lessen the pain of labor as well as speed up post-delivery recovery.

#18 Sandalwood

This is another woody oil with a rich aroma that has beneficial effects on the respiratory system. You can add sandalwood oil to a lotion and rub over the chest and other parts of the body to find relief from tension, chest pain, mucus and even arthritic symptoms. Some people like diffusing it or even gargling it (diluted). In yoga, some instructors use this oil for its relaxing properties and have found it works with overcoming depression, tearfulness and nervous tension. It is also a great anti-inflammatory and hydrator for the skin.

#19 Clary Sage

Because of its soothing aroma, clary sage is often used to clear the mind, treat insomnia, de-stress, help with depression and deal with emotional difficulty. It can help you get a good night sleep without any night sweats or racing thoughts. Like jasmine oil, clary sage has also proven to be useful for women in labor as it stimulates the release of endorphins (painkillers). Clary sage is also said to help with swelling, skin conditions and oily pores, hair loss and bad odors. It is a great ingredient for a homemade deodorant!

#20 Geranium

Ladies, try geranium. It is known for helping with PMS and menopause symptoms. Your family will thank you! It is great for balancing emotions, stabilizing mood swings, memory, hormones, etc. Geranium also helps prevent muscle and skin sagging and may help get rid of acne and scarring. It is a natural diuretic and increases urination and removal of toxins, and may possibly help get rid of parasites. Geranium is also a natural sedative and can help you overcome apathy or emotional distress.

#21 Clove

Clove oil is your at home dentist-in-a-bottle! It has been used for centuries to help with toothaches, cold sores, gum disease and canker sores. You can also gargle with clove oil to soothe your sore or itchy throat. Always dilute before use in the mouth. You can also use clove oil for earaches, minor wounds and cuts, fungal infections, repelling insects (particularly flees), soothing insect bites and stings, athlete’s foot and stress. Clove is of course popular in cooking because of its flavor and antioxidant and antiviral properties. Some people also find clove useful when battling headaches.

#22 Grapefruit

Grapefruit oil is wonderful. It has a multitude of uses, the aroma is uplifting and it is very affordable. Grapefruit oil is packed with antioxidants, vitamin C, antiviral, antiseptic and antimicrobial  properties and is an overall great tonic. It is believed to help promote the secretion of important hormones and enzymes, as well as help to remove toxins from the body efficiently. Regular use of grapefruit oil may also increase appetite and be good for those who have a hard time with eating regularly. Like other citrus oils, it is a strong disinfectant and can be used for cleaning around the house and removing bad odors.

#23 Oregano

Oregano oil, as you can imagine, packs a quick punch. It has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. I use this whenever I am starting to feel sick, as it speeds up recovery or stops the sickness in its tracks altogether. You can put a few diluted drops in a capsule and take with water once or twice daily to help burn off any invaders that might be in your system. You can also gargle it with a little water to help get rid of a sore throat or infection. Warning! Oregano is a very strong (hot) oil and does not taste good. Try not to let it touch your lips and be prepared with some juice or something to wash it down after use. When you dilute with water, it can also make a fantastic spray for countertops and areas you want disinfected.

#24 Rosemary

Try rosemary oil for a wonderful natural stimulant when you start to get foggy or unfocused. This oil has been used for centuries, is very powerful aromatically and is considered by many cultures to be sacred. You can add it to bathwater, diffuse it on or near your workspace, or dilute it and apply to your skin. Rosemary oil is known to help with mental performance and memory. It can also help with congestion, sinus infections, liver and gallbladder congestion, aching muscles, arthritic pain, digestive disorders and hair growth stimulation. It is recommended that you avoid rosemary if you’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure.

#25 Cinnamon Bark

Diffused, this oil is very spicy and warm. Like oregano, this is a “hot” oil so don’t go smelling it from the bottle too closely unless you want burning nose hairs! Most of us have used cinnamon sticks or powder, but the oil has also been used for a long time as a digestive aid, tonic, sedative, etc. Cinnamon bark oil has a TON of properties, including antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral and astringent to name a few. Because of these properties, it is most often used for boosting the immune system. It can also be used for mood support, cleaning, or just making a room smell nice.

Important Safety Tips

  • It has only been in the past decade or so that people have begun to take essential oils internally. Though in many cases people have found this method beneficial, one must remember that essential oils are extremely concentrated and should only be taken in the smallest amount after adequate research has been done. Most of the benefits of essential oils can be obtained simply through applying topically or aromatically. There is not a lot of long-term research that has been done on the effects of essential oils when taken internally.
  • Do not use oils when you are pregnant without first consulting with a physician.  
  • Do not use oils on babies under 30 months unless advised by a qualified physician.
  • Dilute oils before any topical use on children under 12.
  • When applying oils topically, always start with a small area of skin to check for possible sensitivity. If a reaction occurs you can try diluting with a carrier oil like coconut. If sensitivity persists, only use the oil aromatically.
