Juice detoxes and cleanses are a great way to improve your health, as well as aid in weight loss. They can do wonders for your body, leaving you feeling healthier all around. When your body isn’t concerned with the breakdown of food, it allows for space to focus on absorbing nutrients, ultimately leaving you feeling refreshed and more alert.

Whether it is a short (1-7 days) or long (up to 30 days) detox undertaking, a safe juice detox often results in weight-loss as your digestion revs up to eliminate waste from your body.

If your goal is sustained, long-term weight loss, you will need to commit to a balanced diet and possibly include some further lifestyle changes following your cleanse. For many people, a juice detox leads to some sort of weight loss and if your goal is to keep that weight off, it is important to know what you should be eating to do so once the detox ends.

Make use of your refreshed state of mind and start by introducing a few more foods that burn fat and generally improve your health into your diet every week until you find that you’re eating much more of them than you used to. You may not have tried them all, so now is a good time to experiment.

Here are 12 foods to incorporate into your diet for sustained, healthy weight loss.

1. Oats and Nuts. Oats function as part of a weight loss strategy due to their high amount of fiber, which boosts your metabolism, while leaving you feeling full for longer periods of time. They also contain antioxidants for neutralizing chemicals. Nuts make a healthy snack and will leave you full for hours. Even better are pine nuts, as these contain Lutein, a phytonutrient (a substance found in certain plants, which is believed to be beneficial to human health and disease prevention). This particular nutrient also helps to suppress your appetite, which is  helpful when it comes to weight loss efforts.

2. Hot Peppers. Whilst not to everyone’s taste, peppers, such as chipotles, habaneros and jalapenos, not only add a kick to most dishes, but contain capsaicin, which provides benefits related to weight loss. Preliminary research has been published suggesting that peppers may help to fight the build-up of body fat. After your cleanse, these are a great addition to welcome some flavor back into your diet.

3. Green Tea. Some juice cleanses recommend a nice cup of green tea to end your day so you can have a good night’s sleep. Because there is some caffeine though, this may not be your best bet so late in the day, but that’s up to you. Either way, green tea is filled with antioxidants and can help you to burn fat. It also contains catechins, a disease fighting flavonoid, which can get your body to switch over to burning more calories, alongside fat. It is often not as processed as other teas either, meaning it retains goodness, such as phytonutrients, making it a major player amongst superfoods.

4. Quinoa. Popular amongst vegans for years, quinoa helps you feel full and is low in calories. It is also low on the Glycemic Index, making it less likely to increase your blood sugar levels, in turn, making it a good alternative to rice. It’s also considered a complete protein, containing all 9 essential amino acids (those are the ones our body doesn’t make on it’s own). Contrary to what you may hear, quinoa is a seed, not a grain and is completely gluten free.

5. Mushrooms. Low in fat and calories, mushrooms are a great source of Vitamin B and other essential minerals. With so many varieties, mushrooms are a tasty addition to a healthy diet plan.

6. Cinnamon. Cinnamon rolls may not be conducive to weight loss, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the warm and flavorsome spice (cinnamon walnuts or fruit bars are great.) Cinnamon helps you to regulate your blood glucose levels, which play a big part in how energetic/sluggish you feel. Maintaining good blood sugar balance will help you to resist cravings and feel lively for longer during the day.

7. Tomatoes. The lycopene found in tomatoes (and other red foods) brings you antioxidants that are helpful with a myriad of diseases and conditions. If weight loss is your aim, they are also low in calories, help you feel full longer and contain fiber to keep your digestion moving.

blueberries

8. Berries (especially blueberries). Dark berries are a healthy snack and are part of many juice recipes, but especially blueberries. Blueberries aid with not just general weight loss, but specifically help you to lose fat. They may also play a role in helping the body to break down sugar and fats. Plus, they taste amazing.

9. Spinach, Broccoli, Lentils and Asparagus. Chances are you came across some kind of green juice during your detox. This quartet of super green foods are all excellent additions to a healthy diet. Spinach adds bulk to your stomach without holding onto calories, whilst broccoli helps to shed fat, as it contains many nutrients, such as potassium, B6 and Vitamin A and is also packed with fiber. Lentils are also a good source of fiber, leaving you feeling full between meals as well as help you to maintain a healthy blood sugar balance. Asparagus assists in expelling toxins and helps with digestion, while keeping the good bacteria in your gut. It also has a ton of vitamins and minerals, which is a bonus!

10. Grapefruit. Superfood extraordinaire, it is being proven by clinical studies that grapefruit helps you to lose weight, as it contains unique plant compounds that reduce insulin levels, which leads to weight loss. An alternative to eating grapefruit whole is to enjoy it juiced! This is a flavorsome upgrade to water, loaded with amazing benefits.

11. Salmon. Salmon contains Omega 3. Omega 3 benefits your heart, brain, joints and immunity. It’s also great for healthy, glowing skin.

12. Lean Meats. Think chicken or turkey. This kind of protein has a high thermogenic effect, which means you burn about 30% of the  calories it contains during digestion. So, that 300 calorie piece of chicken you’re enjoying… you burn roughly 90 calories while it’s being broken down. After a juice cleanse, stick to quality meats like this, instead of reaching for a burger. This is an easier transition for the body, while providing protein and nutrients, important for your overall health and vitality.

So there you have it! 12 foods you should stock up on during your next shopping trip to sustain and expand on your weight loss efforts after your juice cleanse. Plenty of great recipes can be found online.

Set realistic goals for your weight loss and remember, your overall health will be improved by your intake of these foods. The high thermogenic effect of some of these foods means that you literally burn calories whilst chewing, whereas others will work on improving your metabolism. Others contain important nutrients, which will keep you feeling fit and healthy and stave off craving for junk.

What Our Clients Say*

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
