The 11 Best Home Remedies For Sinus Infections Before Resorting to Antibiotics

By Janet Early

Well… it happened. I got sick.

Usually, my immune system is pretty robust, but an illness going around my office combined with a sleepless trip to Las Vegas weakened its forces enough for a bad sinus infection to develop.

After various experiences, I tend to be very cautious regarding traditional western medicine and avoid pharmaceutical products like cold medicine and cough syrup. By preference, I opt for natural remedies, especially those that have roots in ancient medicine.

Here are 11 of the most effective natural remedies I used to repower my immune system and conquer that cold!

#1. Salt Water

If you’ve ever experienced a sinus infection, you know there’s a lot of phlegm that comes along with it. It’s not pretty, but there are effective ways to break it up.

One trick that provided immediate relief to my illness was gargling with salt water, which:

  • Dehydrates mucus, allowing you to breathe more easily and breaks down the breeding ground for illness-causing pathogens.
  • Helps create an alkalizing environment, in which harmful bacteria can’t survive.

#2. Turmeric Powder

I sprinkled turmeric powder over every meal I prepared. This ancient root provides the following relief to a sinus infection:

  • It’s a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent.
  • Works like a painkiller (without the dangerous side effects).
  • Detoxifies the liver, removing toxins from the body.
  • Cleanses the blood.

#3. Green Smoothies And Organifi

Greens are your best friends when fighting an illness. Nutrient-rich veggies like spinach and kale, combined with anti-inflammatory ingredients like ginger, lemon and turmeric can work overtime to bulk up your immune response.

Plus, adding coconut oil or avocado to the smoothie makes for a creamy texture and can be used as an easy meal replacement if the throat is too sore to handle solid food.

A green juice is an even better choice, since the antioxidants in juices hit the bloodstream faster than those from smoothies do. But, if you don’t have a juicer (like me), Fitlife’s Organifi juice blend comes in handy for a quick and tasty shot of vitamins to your system.

#4. Matcha Green Tea With Honey And Cinnamon

Hot tea alone feels incredibly soothing to a rough, sore throat; matcha green tea takes it one step further by flooding your body with antigen-fighting antioxidants. Matcha has been found to have 137x the polyphenols as regular green tea and more than 60x the antioxidant level of spinach.

On top of that, honey possesses antibacterial, antiviral and antimicrobial properties that prove why it has been a go-to natural cold remedy for centuries. It is a perfect partner to cinnamon to deliciously flavor your healing cup of tea – cinnamon is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial as well!

#5. Spice

Spicy ingredients are highly antibacterial and antimicrobial, properties that work to destroy harmful bacteria that compromise your immune system.

During my illness, I opted for cayenne pepper (sprinkling it on many dishes, including scrambled eggs and mashed sweet potatoes) and sriracha sauce. You immediately experience the relief of clearer sinuses as these hot ingredients slide down your throat.

#6. Vitamin C Supplements

There were days when my throat was very sore and munching down fruits was a bit painful. To make sure my body was still receiving the adequate amounts of vitamin C – a powerful antioxidant that prevents damage from free radicals and wards off infectionsI took a natural vitamin C supplement purchased from a local health foods store.

It’s worth noting that scientific evidence does not show a correlation between vitamin C supplementation and prevention of colds, but there is evidence to show that it can reduce how long such an illness lasts for. Generally, it’s best to fulfill your daily vitamin intakes through diet, but since I was getting lower doses of fruit, supplementation made sense.

#7. Magnesium Powder

There were days when my clogged sinuses caused some debilitating headaches. Magnesium powder is an easy and effective way to combat throbbing forehead pain.

A simple supplement, such as one you mix right into a glass of water, has been found to be highly effective in helping with and preventing migraines.

#8. Mint Extract

I used mint extract to help me in 2 ways:

  • Adding two drops to tea or water. Besides providing some sweet flavor to your drink, the menthol component in peppermint restrains the nerves that react to painful stimuli. This is why many throat lozenges include menthol – because they soothe an aching throat.
  • Rubbing a drop on each of my temples. Mint extract can also provide relief to throbbing temples and headache discomfort by cooling the skin and relieving tight cranial muscles.

#9. Ginger Soup

Steaming hot soup alone helps clear out clogged sinuses and hydrates your body, giving it the water it needs to flush out viral bugs. When adding soup to the mix, the recipe becomes an even more potent cold-reliever.

Ginger is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory and is very helpful in suppressing aggravating coughs. The taste kick it offers also stimulates perspiration, which cleans out your system and lowers body temperature, therefore assisting with mild fever relief.

#10. SLEEP

The first Saturday following getting sick, I slept the whole day. And I mean sleeping in, followed by 6 naps and then lights out by 8pm. It wasn’t until the next morning that I realized just how badly my body needed the rest.

And it’s no wonder based on the extraordinary rejuvenative powers of sleep!

Sleep:

  • Repairs and builds new cells overnight.
  • Boosts immune response.
  • Decreases levels of inflammation.
  • Reduces levels of stress and blood pressure and the threat they pose to your immune system.
  • Benefits the formation of immunological memory so that your immune system can recall effective resistance responses to fight against repeat foreign antigens.
  • Regulates hunger hormones.
  • Reduces risk for anxiety and depression.
  • Stabilizes moods.
  • Rejuvenates the skin.

People always yearn for a “miracle cure,” which often leads them to try various pharmaceuticals and spend lots of money. But the closest thing humans have to such a “miracle” treatment is sleep!

In the modern mindset that is obsessed with constant productivity and quantity, don’t forget that taking time to rest and allow your body to heal itself is critically important. Not doing so is what got me sick in the first place!

#11. WATER

Staying hydrated is the key to any wellness recovery plan. Proper hydrations aids a cold by flushing out toxins, maintaining energy levels and opening your airways.

Drinking lots of water is the easiest way to help your body fight that bad bacteria!

If you’re fighting a seasonal illness, I hope these tricks help you find relief!
