11 Ingredients Making You Moody
Is your diet making you moody?
It’s a relatively new idea for a lot of people – the idea that the food they eat could be affecting their mood, even worsening their depression, anxiety and other mood issues.
When you think about it, it makes sense. In fact, it should really be considered common sense. Despite the fact that food has become somewhat of a cultural event, the reason we eat it is to keep us alive and to give our body building blocks to rebuild and heal.
If a tiny pharmaceutical pill can erase symptoms of pain, make congestion go away, soothe a tummy ache and/or make you sleepy, doesn’t it make sense that all the food and beverages we are consuming constantly might also have the ability to either help or harm us dramatically?
So how much does the food we eat really affect us?
Quite a lot. Most likely, much more than we realize.

All of this things have an obvious effect on how you feel. Studies have linked certain foods to poor gut health – and poor gut health has been linked to mood disorders, even ones as serious as generalized anxiety, clinical depression and schizophrenia.
So now we know that it matters a great deal what we put in our mouth! But are there certain foods that are worse than others? Certain foods or ingredients that we should not just limit, but absolutely avoid entirely?
This is the most widely used toxic herbicide on food crops in the entire world. An estimated 1 billion pounds of this is applied to our food sources every year. Research has linked glyphosate (which is nearly impossible to get off our food entirely before consuming) to cancer, nutritional deficiencies, systemic toxicity and mental health decline.

#2 High Fructose Corn Syrup
HFCS feeds pathogens in your gut which enables them to disrupt the balance of your gut bacteria. Most anything that disrupts your gut bacteria has power to disrupt your mood. Corn syrup is extremely high in sugar (hence the name) which is next on our list of bad guys.
Studies have found that sugar suppresses a hormone called brain-derived neuropathic factor (BDNF). Patients suffering from depression and/or schizophrenia have been found to have extremely low levels of BDNF, suggesting a link.
Sugar also causes inflammation which, if left unchecked, damages the brain and drastically weakens the immune system.
Overconsumption of sugar also causes insulin and leptin resistance which also affects mental wellbeing.
It is a mystery to me why this is still allowed on store shelves. Linked to 92 different adverse health reactions, aspartame is just as poisonous to your health as refined sugar, making its purpose as a sugar-replacer all but worthless. Among its many side effects, aspartame is linked to depression and panic attacks.
You don’t like to hear it, I know. But the more we research it the more we find that gluten is simply not good for anyone. A protein in gluten has been shown to significantly damage the intestines, leading to leaky gut. A growing body of research points to gluten as promoting depression and schizophrenia.
#6 Artificial Colorings/Dyes
Unlike most other developed countries around the world, America is still comfortable using many different artificial food dyes that are linked to allergies, asthma, ADHD and mood disorders. If your food is a bright color, it likely contains food dyes. Check labels and only buy foods that are colored with natural food colorings such as beet and turmeric.
#7 Hydrogenated Oils
You can find these in the bulk of processed foods. Hydrogenated oils are added to prolong shelf life and are a common source of trans fats. These are difficult for the body to digest and have been linked to increased cholesterol levels, weight gain and moodiness.
#8 Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
This is another ingredient added to processed foods to enhance flavor and prolong shelf life. You also find it in many asian fast food restaurants. It is highly addictive and known to cause brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, moodiness, nausea and more.
These are added to processed foods, especially meats like bacon, sausages and hot dogs. When heated to high temperatures they turn into compounds called nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are extremely carcinogenic and known to cause moodiness.
#10 Sodium Benzoate
Sodium benzoate is a synthetic chemical that has been linked to ADHD, hyperactivity and asthma among other things.
#11 Fast Food
Traditional fast food like hamburgers, sausages, pizza and doughnuts have been shown to increase one’s risk for depression.
It can be overwhelming at first to realize how many enemies are lurking in our food supply. Reading labels can seem daunting at first, but the more you research and learn the more quickly you will be a deciphering them. Less is usually more, so if you pick up some food with a list of 50 ingredients you can put it down without looking at it further.
Work on removing just one of these at a time and take notice of your moods. Let me know what you find!
