10 Ways To Successfully Boost Your Metabolism

I admit, my understanding of my metabolism was very limited. It was mystical and elusive and the only evidence I had of it was when I had to go number 2.

As I began to learn about how amazing my body truly is, I was at awe of my metabolism. Your metabolism can be defined as the physical and chemical changes that occur inside your body to provide energy for life processes, it is what allows your body to grow and function.

If you are like me, then you are interested in knowing how to effectively get your metabolism working properly so that it can send messages throughout your body, regulate hormones, balance blood sugar and most importantly, burn calories. Because let’s face it, we all want to look and feel our best!

Here are 10 ways to keep your metabolism running at optimum level:

1. ALWAYS Eat Your Breakfast

There is a reason why breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating a proper breakfast jump starts, fuels and keeps your metabolism flowing.

There are so many choices, if you are in a hurry, eat your leftover dinner or prep something the night before that you can grab on the go. For those who have time, try a healthy combination of fats and protein, like an egg omelet with spinach and avocado

2. Eat Balanced Meals And Snacks

This is a tough one for me, because when I get busy in the hustle and bustle of my day, I forget to eat. But eating at regular times throughout the day regulates blood sugar and keeps your metabolism steady.

Don’t go longer than 3-4 hours without eating. Eat your last meal three hours before bedtime to allow your body time to rest and digest.

3. Eat Fat, Burn Fat

Fat has gotten such a bad reputation over the years that people tend to avoid it at all costs. During my transformation, I learned that healthy fats like nuts, seeds and avocados ease cravings, regulate blood sugar levels and keep your metabolism fueled.

4. Focus On Alkalizing Your Body

True story: one Monday while on our coach’s call, one coach mentioned that she drinks a concoction of apple cider vinegar, baking soda and lemon. I remember the look on my face, I cringed just at the thought of tasting baking soda. Even now, I am cringing. Yet I decided to try this undeniably disgusting concoction and my body thanked me for it. This was the most alkalizing concoction I had ever taken.

Maybe you don’t have or want to go so hardcore. Simply add some lemons or apple cider vinegar into your meals and drinks. This can boost your metabolism and even speed up weight loss.

5. Lower Your Caffeine Intake

During my transformation, I slowly replaced coffee with herbal, green, red and white teas. I have always been a tea drinker, but my love for tea increased because of how amazing I felt. I love tea so much that I am the resident tea expert at Fitlife.

By lowering your caffeine intake, you are balancing blood sugar and promoting deeper sleep and these both help balance your metabolism.

6. Count Nutrients, Not Calories

This can be hard to do as we have been taught to pay attention to the amount of calories in our food. As a health coach, I can tell you that quality is always superior over quantity.

Choose whole nutrient dense food, like leafy greens, nuts, seeds and fresh fruit as they have vitamins and minerals that improve your metabolism.

7. Hydrate

I think I have written about this subject so many times, but it is because it is so vital. Most of us are dehydrated and don’t even know it.

To keep it really simple, drink at least ½ your bodyweight in ounces; if you are 150 lbs, drink 75 oz or more of water. By doing this, your body systems will run smoothly and allow your metabolism to do what it does best.

8. Sleep

The more you read my material, you get a sense of how much I value sleep. This is one of the things we measure in our transformation program. At night your cells regenerate and your adrenals recover.

It is important to shoot for at least 8 hours of sleep every night. A deep, full sleep cycle helps to boost your immune system and keep your metabolism purring like a V8 engine.

9. Stay Consistent

Consistency is key, by eating regularly and at regular intervals you are supporting your metabolism. When you go several hours without eating or drinking, your body feels fatigued and lethargic. Then you reach for the highly caffeinated and sweetened drinks that make your insulin, hormones and metabolism go haywire and thusly challenge your body’s natural rhythm.

Your eating habits, exercise routine and sleep schedule should all be as regular as possible.

10. Be Kind To Yourself

This was a hard one for me, as I would often find myself in the vicious cycle of feeling guilty when I didn’t do what I set out to do. During my transformation and as a health coach, I have learned different strategies that help me stay consistent with my healthy lifestyle, but if all else fails, I work on nourishing, nurturing, honouring and respecting myself with my thoughts and actions.

It is important to feed your mind and body with positive energy by creating a healthy relationship around food, body image and wellness. Choose what feels right and best at any given time and don’t beat yourself up for certain choices.

Although gender, age, genetics and body composition play their roles with how effectively your metabolism fuels your body, the good news is that you can begin to implement these 10 simple tips today to support it.
