10 Ways To Alkalize Your Body And Increase Your Immunity

As medical science has finally caught up with antiquity in regards to inflammation and its link to disease, alkalinity has become a topic of discussion over the last several years. So much so, that it has become a trend, as we see celebrities drinking alkaline water and companies like Essentia and Aquahydrate making alkaline water more readily available to everyone.
When I began my transformation journey the “first time,” I found the idea of alkalinity to be ambiguous. I could not wrap my head around it and often shied away for it. It was not until I began my transformation with Fitlife that I was delighted to find out that I was already eating a fairly alkaline diet and only needed some minor adjustments.
Through my transformation with Fitlife and as a Transformation coach, I have learned how to enhance what I was already doing and here are a few ways to do it:
1. Drink Plenty Of Water
This comes as a no brainer. Adequate water intake supports all body systems and clears out excess toxins. If you are wondering how much water to drink, the best rule of thumb is half your bodyweight in ounces daily to keep your body systems regulated. For example, if you weigh 130 pounds, drink 65 ounces of water. I usually advise my clients to drink about 80 ounces per day.
Carry a water bottle with you and fill it with filtered water all day (if possible opt for a glass bottle, drinking from plastic bottles can wreak havoc on your hormones). For an extra boost, add lemon! Lemon water is highly alkaline and it contains vitamin C, which aids in digestion and bonus, it tastes good.
2. Support Your Lymph
I wrote an article specifically on this topic explaining why it is super important to support your lymph. Support lymphatic detoxification by exercising daily, dry brushing and practicing breath work techniques or breath-focused forms of yoga. Eating whole foods, focusing on self-care, keeping up with a spiritual practice and reducing stressors in your life all create more alkaline blood flow.
3. Trade Coffee For Herbal Or Green Tea
One of the ways that I like to treat myself is getting a wonderfully aromatic blonde roast cup of coffee from Starbucks, but the amount of caffeine in this coffee isn’t good. Instead I daily opt for green tea which is highly alkaline and if I need a caffeine boost, I drink black tea. As you know I really do love my teas, because there are so many to choose from. Try jasmine, sencha, or matcha, or switch to a less acidic coffee like bulletproof.
4. Replace Sugar With Stevia, Coconut Sugar, Or Honey
Admittedly this one was a hard one for me. This is because everything else except honey has an after-taste that is just unpleasant. As a Fitlife coach, I just opt for no sugar all together, since sugar is one of the most acidic foods; this is because sugar feeds the bad bacteria and yeast that leads to inflammation. Try to balance the amount you are having by using alternative sweeteners as much as possible if you are unable to go without it.
5. Add A Salad Or Greens To Every Meal
Leafy greens are highly alkaline and rich in oxygen. Load up on them by adding a spoonful of green powder to your smoothies, or buy liquid chlorophyll to put in your water. Drink fresh green vegetable juices as often as possible.
6. Try Oil Pulling
This practice works to cleanse the mouth, balance acids and eliminate bad breath. Try swishing with 1 tablespoon of raw organic coconut oil daily for 15 to 20 minutes, your mouth will thank you for it!
7. Chew Your Food
Imagine for a moment you are so hungry and the food in front of you smells amazing in the best way possible. Your mouth salivates and you can’t wait to inhale it all down. You barely let the food settle in your mouth long enough before you swallow it. Sound familiar? For some this may sound obvious, but it’s important to remember that digestion begins in the mouth! Saliva is alkaline-forming, so chewing every mouthful 20 to 40 times is ideal.
8. Sweat (Or Bathe) It Out
One of my favorite ways to self-care is to go to the local bathhouse where I can sit in the salt sauna and sweat out all the stress and toxins I have accumulated during the month. The more you sweat, the more toxins you release. The fewer toxins in your systems, the less acidic your body is.
Infrared saunas, steam baths and hot yoga classes are fantastic ways to take your sweating to the next level. I also love to soak in an Epsom salt bath a few times a week. One cup of Epsom salts, ¼ cup of baking soda and 10 drops of lavender and eucalyptus oil takes me to total alkaline bliss.
9. Move Your Body, Body
We all know that exercising regularly to actively move acids out of the body is paramount to a healthy and balanced body. This keeps the lymph system flowing and creates more alkaline blood. Restorative practices like Iyengar yoga, Yin yoga and gentle stretching also counteract acids that build up from intense activity. Constantly mix up your routine! Dance, go for a run or swim, or chill out with a gentle stretch to get the lymph going!
10. Sleep And De-Stress
Did you know that stress affects you on your most fundamental level and creates cellular acidity? Managing stress is so vital if you want to maintain a healthy body. Always work on bringing yourself back into balance by creating restorative rituals that make you feel good and balance your mind-body connection.
Go to bed early; meditate as often as possible; take baths; journal; go for a walk after dinner; do whatever it is that makes you feel centered. When it comes to counteracting stress, commit to do it by any means necessary.
It is extremely imperative that you offset environmental toxins, excess sugar, medications and caffeine as they all create excess acidity in the body. And as I am sure you know, an overly acidic diet eventually makes your body more susceptible to disease. With habits that alkalize the body, you reach a more neutral pH level and enjoy a healthier and vibrant life.
