10 Reasons NOT To Throw Out This Common Herb

Do any of these ring a bell for you? Perhaps these are things you struggle with, or maybe someone you know deals with them on occasion. If either are the case, then I think I found a good friend for you (you’re probably already acquainted!).
Coriander (also known as Dhania or Cilantro) is an herb that is popularly used around the world for its garnishing, decorative, condiment-like qualities. It has a sweet aroma that adds an extra edge to the culinary dishes it beautifies and its soft, clustered leaves can give almost anything a fancy flare.
More often than not, because it’s used as more of a decorative item than anything, coriander will typically get tossed aside and thrown into the garbage by the end of the day along with the leftover food. No big deal, it really doesn’t taste all that good anyway and besides, it’s just a flimsy herb, right?
Coriander actually holds quite a bit more power in its soft leaves than anyone gives it credit for. Most people aren’t even aware just what these beautiful little clusters can do to benefit you and your body (and believe me, there’s quite a bit).
Along with containing nourishing amounts of vitamin C, essential oil components, ascorbic acid and other critical vitamins and minerals, coriander has the ability to help pinpoint and tackle some common disorders and ailments that are found all around the world today.
Here are 10 of those health issues that coriander can help you with:
1. Skin Inflammation
Coriander contains cineole, which is one of the many essential oil components it holds. Along with its linoleic acid content, coriander provides antirheumatic and antiarthritic care, particularly to your skin when it’s inflamed. As it combats the inflammation, it also can help ease discomfort and improve overall appearance.
2. Blood Pressure
For people who particularly suffer from hypertension, coriander has the ability to help reduce blood pressure and therefore ease the tension in a person’s blood vessels. The reason it can do this is because of the interaction that happens between the calcium ions in the coriander and the cholinergic (a neurotransmitter, also known as acetylcholine) found in the peripheral and central nervous systems of your body.
This relaxing, depressurizing effect of coriander is what also helps lower the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular conditions.
When coriander is ingested, a series of minerals and neurotransmitters are stimulated, which then proceed to find their way throughout your digestive track, calming any discomfort and sorting out any digestive issues, such as indigestion or the potential need to vomit. Just the aroma of coriander alone can help ease nausea and has even been known to help with certain eating disorders.
Along with aiding in proper digestion, the essential oil components found in coriander have also been known to help specifically with diarrhea. The components known as borneol and linalool specifically help with taking care of the liver and the bonding of the bowels, making sure everything is functioning and digesting as it all should.
5. Menstrual Help
For you women (and men when you notice your lady is having a particularly difficult week *cough cough*), because coriander is a natural stimulant, it helps regulate the proper secretion of hormones from the endocrine gland, making the hormonal effects not quite as discombobulating. Coriander also can help with keeping menstrual cycles on a consistent schedule and ease the pain.
6. Mouth Ulcers
Back before the concept of toothpaste was invented, people would just chew on coriander – and there’s a good reason for why they did. Along with killing off bad breath, citronellol – another essential oil component in coriander – works as an antiseptic and antimicrobial and can help with speeding up the repair of ulcers or other discomforts that can occur in the mouth.
7. Anti-Allergic Properties
Coriander is a great go-to, especially when hay fever season comes around. Coriander has been proven to contain strong antihistamine properties that can reduce the effects of allergies or even help prevent them before they hit. Coriander can also reduce the effects of reactions in general from plants, food, bugs and any other allergy triggers, including swelling and/or hives (when taken internally).
8. Salmonella Protection
“Does anybody actually get salmonella from eating raw cookie dough, or is that just people trying to stop me from living my life?” Though raw cookie dough may not be one of the top causes of salmonella, it is a real, often fatal illness that people do become sick with. Putting up any guard possible against something as dangerous as salmonella is never a waste of effort.
Coriander contains a compound that has actually been proven to be twice as powerful than the leading treatments for salmonella due to its high levels of natural antibiotic capabilities. This compound is known as dodecenal and coriander is full of it. Keeping this compound in your diet can debunk a significant amount of the risk you may have of coming down with this awful illness.
9. Bone Health
We all grew up being taught that calcium strengthens bones. Coriander happens to be a great source of calcium. The highest quantity of calcium in coriander runs down the center of its leaves. This calcium content along with all the other essential nutrients found in coriander help with bone growth – while also keeping your bones strong – and can help prevent bone degradation that comes along with osteoporosis.
10. Eye Care
Coriander is an excellent source for taking care of your eyes and vision. Containing high amounts of vitamin C, vitamin A, antioxidants, phosphorus and other minerals, coriander has the ability to not only help ease any strain inflicted on the eyes, but to also help prevent against vision disorders and diseases such as macular degeneration and conjunctivitis.
While also helping with prevention, because coriander also contains beta-carotene in its leaves along with the calcium, it also has a high potential to reverse the effects of degradation in the eyes of the elderly as well as the young.
How can an herb as soft and simple as coriander possibly contain so many health-benefiting factors? It’s almost unimaginable, especially considering the fact that the list of benefits only continues on and on from there. I guess it just goes to show how powerful, yet intricate Mother Nature can truly be.
How Can You Use It?
Coriander can become an additive to many common meals that you probably already have on a semi-frequent basis.
- Add it in its spice form to your soups and broths.
- Include it in your salsa when you’re either mixing up some of your own or pouring some out to snack on that’s already been made.
- Use it to top off some of your favorite salads.
- Add it to pancake or waffle mix to give it a bit more flavor.
- Keep it as a topper on fish or chicken (just be sure not to shove it to the side!).
Keeping coriander in your diet is an awesome way to give yourself a protective, healthful boost during these times of GMO-infested harvests and poisoned foods lining the grocery shelves. With all that those little clusters of leaves contain, coriander really does have something great to offer for nearly every part of your body.
