10 Habits That Can Seriously Damage Kidney Function

Your kidneys play an important role in your health by filtering your bloodstream and removing waste, toxins and excess water. All the filtered waste eventually leaves your body when you pee. Through urine tests, your doctors can see if your kidneys are functioning properly or if there is a disease or damage going on.

You can damage your kidneys through unhealthy lifestyle choices. You don’t want to do that. Let’s examine the top dangers that can lead to kidney damage and what to do about them. You will be surprised, but alcohol is not one of them.

Not Enough Water

Dehydration correlates with low kidney function and recurring dehydration can cause chronic kidney disease. Make sure to drink enough water: 8-10 glasses (8 oz) a day or more if it’s hot outside or if you are sweating a lot. Stay away from sodas and sugary drinks and limit caffeine. They can actually dehydrate you further. Choose water. Green juices, smoothies and herbal teas should come as an extra too, not instead of your 8 – 10 glasses.

Smoking

Cigarettes and smokeless tobacco can compromise your kidney function and damage your health otherwise. Quit smoking.

Painkillers

Long-term use of painkillers can lead to kidney damage or kidney cancer. Don’t take NSAIDs unless you absolutely need it. Talk to your doctor about safer pain relief options.

Over-The-Counter Medication

OTC drugs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen can also lead to kidney damage. Look for natural alternatives and talk to your doctor about a safer option.

Extreme Exercise

Exercise is good, but extreme exercise can damage your kidneys. Talk to your doctor to learn what fitness habits are safe for you.

Poor Sleep

Turns out that people who sleep less than 8 hours or more than 10 regularly have higher risks of kidney disease. Get your z-s in, but follow the recommended guidelines of 7 – 8 hours a night.

Too Much Protein

Your body needs protein, but people on a high protein diet can cause themselves kidney damage, especially if they already have a kidney condition. Talk to your doctor to see what is safe for your health.

Too Much Sugar

A high-sugar diet can lead to all kinds of ailments, including kidney problems. Opt for greens, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds and beans and eat chocolate, candy, cakes and sugary foods only occasionally if at all.

Magnesium Deficiency

Magnesium deficiency can lead to kidney stones. Most people can benefit from magnesium supplements due to our depleted soils. Always talk to your doctor before supplementing with anything.
